CONVEYANOS OF MEROHANDISE ON RAILWAYS, Jr is small wonder that the Promior should have viewed with almazement and dismay thi dismal foreooast presmited to him by thu Governnic t statistician whom he had sum monld to his assistance in tho hopes of his hiing able to furnish him with a glowing pioturo of the future prosperity of the coloiiy within tho noxt decade, a rapidlygrowing population, bringing a largo inoreaso of tralilo to the railways, with a correspondling oxpansion of the rwveinue, It is hard to have all one's cherished hopes shatturod by tho pitiless logia of facts and figures, thl moro so wheno, one having invoknd the prophet to predict smooth tlings, he can only draw a gloomy forecast of what is to oome, His caloulations, based upon thli present rates, only tontded to prov?o that tih lIrger the traIlli ti greoater would beo the growth of the annual dillcit on the rail. wnys, and, in proportion to the growth of the oonmmerou of the oolony, the more ruin. ous would be the ...

THE KIAMA RAILWAY. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 12 November 1887

THE XIAMA IRAILWAY. Iv the opening of a railway necessarily involved. any of that ceremony which comnnonly does ac coinapiiiy such an event, it could hardly be said that thoe Kiain railway bad yet been oponed. Opened it was, howevar, de fucto, though in no ceremonial sense on WedneSday last, being, we believo, the forty-lirst anoiversary of the birth of the heir apparent. The Kiasna railway is at present a more disjointed fragment, having one end n the burianl ground-ludicrusly termed in the times tables "North Kiamna,"-a spot at tho distance of IL very awlwmrcvid mile from the town, and the other end brohei otfllike a deespi tated snake a few mnilcs beyond Wollongong. Although a railway is usually one of the aost inporticiit factors iim the development of abiy region whore it is brought into existence, and is IL pleasant sight to soe, thoro was on the pre sent occasion abundant reasois for the absence of anything lilko enthusiasin over time opening. Tho principal objec tions were that the whole of the reve|nue of the district woull go to Sydney as hereto. 'fore, and none of it would be returned withl. out the residents imposing extra taxation on themselves, and that thi Government could appoint officers under certain circum stances to interfere in local matters, and re. port, &e., at the expense of the district. IHe proved by figures tlhat it would be impos siblo for many farmers anti landhol. dors to pay the taxes and live clear of debt. His remarks were loudly applauded throughout, iHe then moved tlhat a com. nilttee, consisting of gentlemen named, Ie appointed to report on the bill to a future meeting, in order tlhat the publio might properly consider the...
