The present season is notable, says the ' Australasian,' for the number of times it has been announced that the drought has broken up. The ex cellent rains that fell at many scat tered localities have been reported, and it was accepted that the rainfall . was as good at places from which no neighbourhood of Melbourne there are good sized areas in which the grass is extremely scanty. In such places there has been a fair rainfall this autumn, but the prevalence of strong north winds has proved an effective bar to the growth of the grass. In the remote districts of the far' north the areas that are still suffering from an insufficient fall of rain are very large, and the dwellers therein read with a deal of dissatisfaction that there is a general break-up of the drought. One such announcement was bad enough, but when the story is told on several occa sions and the country is still languish ing for rain the annoyance becomes in tensified. One correspondent up North writes : 'In this dis...

Grain, &c. Hill, Clark and Co. report There haa been a most unaccountable lull this week in almost all lines under this head, the only exception being feed grains, both maize and oats being tsken very freely. Of the latter no prime feed oats are available, those at present on this market being of vary indifferent quality. Good seed oats are also scarce and dear. The raino t.Vlftf llavo fallen mmn^kn „„!«„„ J.....'n~ the laBt day or two have attributed to de press values for both forage and mill offal, the latter being specially difficult to move. The offerings at Kedfern have been Bmall, and included but very few lines of choice quality ; nothing extra prime in the way of either ohaff or hay would sell readily at- ''?] good prices. Meat Inspectors. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 15 May 1896

Meat Inspectors. Everything is not better done in the Old World than here. Take the in spection of meat for instance.' London has 187 inspectors, and as a result of a recent Parliamentary inquiry, of this number only two claimed to have any special knowledge of meat prior to their appointment. The only qualifica tion possessed by the others is the cer tificate of the Sanitary Institute, which is, apparently, awarded in the most free and easy manner to plumbers, bricklayers, tram conductors, carpen ters, builders, and florists, all of whom figure largely in this return. In Glasgow, out of 13 inspectors, three are returned as butchers and 10 police men ! The proportion is ridiculous, but when we are gravely informed that under the Glasgow Police Act, 1866, 'All police officers are empowered to seize diseased meat,' we must admit that in number of inspectors Glasgow takes the lead. — ' Sydney Mail.'
