LEGAL COSTS. [Newspaper Article] — Temora Herald and Mining Journal — 20 October 1882

LEGAL COSTS. The ostena:^le rc&aon for the establish ment of district courts was to afford cheap and speedy means of redressing* grievances, bv obviating tho necessity of having recourse to tho costly and tedious proccss of a Supremo Court trial; and by carrying the law to people's doors, avoid the ruiuous ox jHjQfce of dragging an array of wit iiesses a long distance. This is how the matter stands in tlieory, but in practice it is found Quite different, and instead of lessening expense, actually increases it to an alarming extent. It appeals from recent ex* amples that the costliness of legal proceediogs depends, not on the court in which a case is tried* not on the length of the trial* or the distance which witnesses have to be taken, Uut on the ingenuity end unscrupu lousnese displayed by attorneys in making out a bill of cofit& A glance at op© of these unique documents reveat6 the fact, that the aim of some attorneys is to ruts suitors utterly and j irrevocably. ...
