TO THE EDITOR OF THE NORTH-EASTERN ENSIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 3 September 1872

O- 7HE EDITOR OF TiE' NOvRTH EASTERN ENSIOGN. Sir,`.-There are some smart men in Benalla ,very smart indeed in their own estimation .and ihe Bonalla Shire 0ouncil'is blessed with a few of them. Their recent` manacu vring at the land board was* really admirable, and quite worthy of the actors in the scene. The ratepayers are not so blind, however, as to fall In fathoming the shallow pretext they have resorted to 'for 'misappropriating the shire funds. The low ocunning of these art fol dodgers is only. surpassed by their stupi dity in fancying themselves so. clever, anrd the ratepayers so dull' of:perception as to be unable' to penetrate their -transparent: and' contemptible scheme. 'They have succeeded thus far by unblushing effrontery and bare faced dishonesty in indirectly appropriating the rates of outlying districts to the improvoe ment of private property in and around Benalla; but as there is a limit even to their audooity, they find It has reaohed that'point, and they now reso...

THE North-eastern Ensign Published on Tuesdays and Fridays. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1872. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 3 September 1872

THE North-eastern Ensign Published on Tuesdays and Fridays.   TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1872. OUR support of the late Duffy Government was based upon the principle that we approved of its policy, which should have had a fair trial. Of course, every journal that so upheld Mr. DUFFY was by the Opposition Press stig- matised as giving a blind adherence to a cer lain political chief. This is by no means the true state of the case. With respect to the Times and -lines scandal, we stated that bo fore we expressed an opinion upon it we should wait to hear the evidence adduced in support of the charge.. The matter is now, we mhy say, fully beforo the publio,- and we do not hesitate to state that we cannot agree with the' report which the committee has drawn up. It seems to us that in Parliamon tary inquirics, where the chaoranter of a mem ber is at stake, eovery kid of effort is made as it were to ease off the weiglt of the charge. By what course of reasoning the committee can have...

PRESBYTERIAN :CHURCH CO1M MITTEE. To the Editor of tIl Northeaiter, Endagn. Sir,-Will you allow" me apace in your valuable paper to expose what I consider a very nasty proceeding on the part of the committee of the Preabyterian Church at the Duck Ponds. Tlhere was a sum of money collected for the purpose of building a house for the minister; the money .was collected from persons belonging to all denominations for the said purpose. But instead of ap plying it to the use it was intended for, they have-tiken it 'upon' themselves to pay the minlister witli it. Now, Sir,'I should lke to know if they intend to replace it againo,or if they think they can do as 'they like with it simplybecause it was' placed in their sale custody.. If theoy do think so I'mosteolemnly protest, against such: conduct,?'and consider` it a gross breaub of faith to all ith?' sabscri bers. IREOREATION GROUNDS. To the &?itor of the Northeastern Easign. Sir,-Seeing that there is £4,500 about to be voted for the fencing and improving of public parks and, re creation grounds, I would suggest that our .Shire Councillors and our noble and learned President in particular show some interest in the matter, and exert themselves to obtain a portion of this money. for fencing in the recreation ground in Benalla. :I quite agree with Mr Nixon's view of the matter if our noble and just councillors will not bestir them. selves to get the land fenced in, and vested under the control of trus'ees, that it otght to be tild by auction or be proclaimed open for selection as early as pin. aiblo. On Monday last called at MAr Spearing's when he found tle saddle had been taken from the hotel. Information was given to the police. The saddle really belonged to a MrThompson, who gave it to witness to get ramlled. It was worth about £7.
