Witt 3Sega #ajette. "Quod Potig Hie Est." SATUTvDAY, MARCH 3,1866. Tee last English mail brings intelligence j of a sanguinary outbreak of the negro population of Jamaica. A clergyman, the Rev. Victor Hersciiell and fifteen gen tlemen are amongst the victims who were murdered with savage ferocity. The cause of the insurrection has yet to reach us, but from the vague information furnished by the newspapers we may gather that op pressive class taxation, and misgovernment have something to do with the fearful tra gedy. Governor Eyre, a name known to Australians, seems to have acted with decision, and by the aid of the military crushed out the rebellion ere it had reached the point said to be intended by its pro motors. Some two hundred of the leaders and abettors have been shot or hung, in cluding a Mr. Gordon, a negro member of the Jamaica Legislature, and some colored preachers of the Baptist persuasion. The greatest excitement prevailed in England on rcceipt of the news. A meeting wa...

The Bega Gazette, "Quod Petis Hie Est." SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 1866. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 10 March 1866

Cfje &r$a <&ajettc, "Quoii Petis Hie Est." SATURDAY, MARCH 30, 1806. It was confidently believed that when Gardiner, Morgan, (Jk-rkrt, Ha-ll. and Dunn', were eventually disposed of tli ere would be an end to bush ranging, and that the Felon's Apprehension Act had thoroughly purged the interior of all aiders and abettors of outlaws. But h )w woefully mstaken people are—how shortsighted our legislators. All these des peradoes are gone ; they have been shot down like dogs; and Dunn now lies in gaol under the sentence of death ; yet is bashranging as rife, and as boldlv and suc cessfully carried on as ever, and, if any thing, they are more numerous, and their depredations spread over a greater extent of country than in Gardiner's day. The expensive Military Police System, which was callediuto existence to suppress the evil, has failed in its object, and is proved beyond doubt to be unsuited for this polony. The Felon's Apprehension Act also has proved to be of...
