BRITISH EXTRACTS.   On Monday last, a highly respectable,   though not very numerous meeting of the in- habitants of this city (Durham) took place at the Town-hall, for the purpose of taking into consideration the propriety of petitioning Parliament for the gradual abolition of slavery in the British Colonies. ÈRÏflSÊ INTELLIGENCE.. KING OF PERSIA.-It has been stated that the King of Persia has been recently converted to Christianity, by the arguments of the celebrated Missionary, Mr. Martin. Such a conversion must have an important effect in spreading the light of the,Gospel through the regions of darkness, ignorance, and idolatry. If this report should prove correct, ' the providential obscurity which seemed to hang on the death of this amiable christian will be in a great measure uuravel eThe London Water Works were last year pulled down- on the Middlesex side ; and the other works, on the Southwark side, were likewise removed. The Company is no more: they having disposed of their in- terest to the New River Company, who had laid down pipes to serve the former Com- pany's connexions. CATLRPILLARS.-By Mr. John Sweet.-In the month of May last, I found the Gooseberry Caterpillar had begun its usual ravages On the leaves of a quaiter pf gooseberries, in my nur- sery near Bristol. SONNET ON THE SABBATH MORNING. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser — 2 January 1824

SONNET On the sabbath morning.   With silent awe I hail the sacred morn That slowly wakes, while all the fields are still ; A soothing calm on every breeze is borne, A graver murmur gurgles from the rill, And echo answers softer from the hill, And softer sings the Linnet from the thorn, The Skylark warbles in a tone less shrill ; Hail, light serene I hail, sacred Sabbath morn ! The Rooks float silently, in airy drove, The Sun a placid yellow lustre throws ; The Gales, that lately sighed along the grove, Have hush'd their downy wings in dread repose ; The hovering rack of clouds forgets to move ; So smil'd the day, when the first morn arose ! Poets and Poetry.— It is only through early particulars of thought that men be- come Poets. Of that which they have all their lives been ruminating upon, they have ideas, more vivid than other people; & by giving those ideas, with all the force of language they can, they write poetry. This is true of moie than ever poets pro...
