RAILWAY STATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 14 March 1857

RAILWAY STATIONS. I Mu. IlAY with much gravity informs the House that, now the horse is stolen, the Commissioners will lock the stible 'door, — that henceforth they | will not first allow mischief and waste to be com mitted, and afterwards consider how they are to be avoided; tor the Government, says Mr. Hay, will not in future ask lor any money for a line for the construction of which a com/ilntii estimate is not before the House. Such a declaration was necessary to .give the country same guarantee against the perpetuation of past and present folly. Now, parsing for. a time the extreme folly of beginning at the wrong end, and also divers inter mediate follies, let us see how much mischief easy of avoidance has been anil is still being com mitted as regards the item of Stations. In May, 1853, when Mr. Wcntworth, as chair man of the ljohl speculators who initiated the undertaking, addressed ihc Government, he plainly declared that 'it was made a .line qua non that, unless encouragame...
