CORRESPONDENCE. POLICE MAGISTRATES' LAW. TO THE EDITOR OF THE BULLETIN. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 31 January 1878

CORRESPONDENCE. POLICE MAGISTRATES' LAW. TO TUE EDITOltl OF TIÏIÎ BULLETIN, SIR,-In your issue! ot to-day, under tho heading "Thc English Mail Boat," I read, that while Mr. D'Alherlis (the naturalist) remained on Thursday Island, two of his ercw, sentenced to four months' imprisonment, were on their way to Rockhampton gaol, without warrants. Kn jtamant, 1 inferred from other portions of I your reiioiter's pleasing sketch, that naturalists (like missionaries), in tlieso southern islands, seem to have an all pervading determination to make their avoca- tions pay. Returning, however, to the two educated (!) South Sea Island lioys, now supposed to be incarcerated in Rockhampton gaol, your re- porter says that "thc depositions in the case, with the counter charges, have been forwarded til thc Attorney-General, and there the matter will most likely end." Of this, unfortunately for the real progress and reputation of VQucensIaiid, tbcro seems but little doubt. Ali extended observation of m...

The Morning Bulletin, ROCKHAMPTON. THURSDAY, JANUARY 31, 1878. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Bulletin — 31 January 1878

ROCKHAMPTON. THU USDA Y, JtANÜARY 31, 1878. THE treatment rec ¡ved hy civil servants in Victoria of lal e will not add to the attractions of gov :rnment employment. Already in most if the colonies it is shunned by men o ' capacity and enter- prise. The goveri ment stroke has no attractions for the ii, and they have a decided objection t j occupy any post in which advanceme nt is retarded by political influence, and in which they might expect t( see incompetent " politicians " introduced into depart- ments and promoted over the heads of trained, capable, arid faithful public ser- vants. It is very ; true that the craving for government billets shown by a large class in colonial society is deeply humiliat- ing to every Australian who desires to see the people of these young colonies dis- play a spirit of independence and self reliance. But when the lists of office seekers come to bb examined, it soon appears that young men fresh from the mother country, and elderly ne'er-do wells from...
