The family of moccasin snakes (Colluber) is also quite numerous, there being not less than ten varieties, most of which being quite as venomous as the rattlesnake. By dissecting great numbers of different species 1 learned that the anatomical structure of ihe poisoning apparatus is similar in all the different varieties of venomous ser...

Passing the west line of the Pallawatomie nation, we entered upon open prairie, often reaching the river on both sides ; now and then a small grove,\and a li g ht fringe of timber on the bunks. On the right, in a great prairie bottom, in a bend of the river extending bank to Rock Creek, Mr. Perry has made a selection for a stock farm ; and a little wa\ above his claim there is another great bend, offering a tempting inducement to some other enterprising farmer who has a taste for slock raising. Beyond this we passed a large grove of limber on the rig ht, and then passed a most appropriate bluff for a town site—the first we saw for several mi'ies. Here we saw Blue Hill, which is a prominent landmark overlooking the mouth of Blue river. From this poini upward, the bluffs are higher and more abrupt, and the country ba...
