RECOLLECTIONS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

RECOLLECTIONS . { Continued from yanuary . ) As we descended the plank from our ocean home , the unaccustomed weight of our sachels and shawls dispelled the illusions and dreamy fancies which a life on the ocean wave had fed , and forcibly reminded us that we were not nymphs and naiads creeping up from the sea , but mortals climbing up a long wharf , among strange unfamiliar faces , sights and sounds , desirous to see the greatest sea-port in the world . On all sides we heard the exclamation Americans , and an independent brigade , too . We took our cue , from these compliments and looked at the great commercial docks , which have been constructed at a cost of $ 20 , 000 , 000 , at the vessels and world of masts forming a complete abattis lying here , and drew mental comparisons . From these we were aroused by the din of cabmen ; their system , we afterwards learned is much like London , cheap and comfortable , and our sight-seeing seemed possible even under the Argus eyes of an unc...

WHAT IT IS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

WHAT IT IS . What are you making ? is now asked by the visitor to our machine shop , after vainly trying to satisfy his curiosity without ^ troubling th e busy workman . A part of the Thermometer Graduator , is the prompt reply . O Yes ! and the visitor passes on . For the farther information of such persons , and all others interested , the following is submitted . In theFahrenheit thermometer , the distance between the column of mercury immersed in melting snow and sal-ammoniac at 760 millimetres barometric pressure , and the same column at the boiling point of water under the same barometric conditions , is divided into 212 parts . If the diameter of the column is uniform , of course the divisions are equal . But in thermometers this is seldom the case . In common thermometers the points 32 , 60 , 9 8 , and 140 0 , are determined and marked on the tube . The space between two of these points is equally divided , and the divisions marked on a strip of brass . The linear distance b...

AROUND THE UNIVERSITY . What s the matter with the Orchestra ? Has it concluded to wait a little Moore ? The law of falling bodies was clearly demonstrated in the bookkeeping room a few days since . One of ¦ ¦ he students knows how it is herself . Some amusement was created one morning last week , by the frantic endeavors of a couple of lady students to get into the library unseen during chapel time . The instruction of the engineering students in free hand drawing has devolved upon Mr . Kenis . He has now about thirty students in this and the cast drawing department . F . P . Dobson says that he must have been twice married or there is a terriWe mistake afloat ; for I am sure I married the last time in Janesville , Wisconsin . Now the ILLINI is responsible for this mistake and gladly corrects it . It was an affecting sight to behold our ^^ -Prosecuting Atto rney walking down University Avenue , holding a little girl by the hand , who looked trustingly into his open countenance , wh...

EDITORIAL . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

EDITORIAL . Student life within the walls of school or college is not of long duration . It is but a preparatory period and at most is very short ; yet many of its hours and days are permitted to pass without producing any lasting and profitable results . This cannot be affirmed as universally true , yet it is applicable to the majority of cases . Some there are who economize time admirably , but many more w : \ ste it in a manner truly lamentable . Inconsiderate of its value they permit it to slip away without compelling it to contribute a due portion of truth and growth . Be careful of your money , is an old precept and a very excellent one , but a better one still is , be ca -eful of your time . Time is money . It is also strength , knowledge , success . To no one is time more valuable than to the student engaged in the pursuit of truth . Knowledge is broad and intricate ; the duties of life are multifarious ; great and permanent success is unattainable unless time is economized ...

COLLEGE NEWS AND EXCHANGES- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

COLLEGE NEWS AND EXCHANGES- The Alumni Journal of Lincoln University we mention as decidedly weak and sentimental . Purple cover and intellect , never go together . Aside from the thin wit of the musical contributor and the glorious (?) and unique creative genius (?) displayed in the Anniversary Orations there is nothing . Death is a blessing . Please die . The Obcrlin Review contains a most interesting , philosophical and scholarly production in its last , entitled Latin Civilization . It disr plays the evolution of the Latin element in Europe admirably ; its beauties , its achievements , its present position and the weak moral and vital powers which it possessed . The Teuton is the present controlling power , more than the Latin . The one , the meteor , brilliant , livid and dazzling , declines ; the other , the star , serene , steady , utilitarian , spirit- ual adamantine , shines . The one impulsive seeks the formula , the ideal ; the other , conscientious , grasps truth and exe...

INSECTIVOROUS PLANTS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

INSECTIVOROUS PLANTS . IN his book bearing the above title , Mr . Darwin has given to the scientific world a great amount of valuable knowledge , which was acquired by observations extending through fourteen years . As is known to all , he is a close and careful observer , and nowhere does his accurate painstaking labor show to better purpose than in this , his last work . While he does not explain the movements themselves , he gives us the phenomena accompanying them in such a plain and interesting manner , that one feels an enthusiasm for the man and the work . He began his observations in order to determine if plants caught insects , because they were insects and says I was surprised by finding how large a number of insects were caught by the leaves of the common sun dew ( Z ? ra ? em rotundifolid ) on a sheath in Sussex The main results of his experiments , he states , are firstly , the extraordinary sensitiveness of the glands ; secondly , the power of rendering soluble , diges...
