m M * [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 2 May 1868

m M * The Submarine life of a Diver . About twenty years ago , Hiram Hill j then well known in Cairo , accepted employment on Messrs . Eads & Nelson s wrecking or submarine bell boats . In time he was installed as diver , and remained in tbe employment a period of eighteen years . We have learned from him something of the life of a diver . ., ¦ The use of a bell , in diving , Is now discarded . The diver wears a water-tight armor over his entire person , except the head , which Is covered by an Inverted metallic pot , in which the head can turn and move at ease . Thick , transparent glass is fixed in front to serve as windows ; and to prevent accident this glass Is protected by steel guards or fenders . Equipped in this armor the diver puts on a pair of lead-soled shoes , weighing each twenty pounds , lashes to his back and breast a piece of lead weighing forty pounds , attaches the tube , through which he receives air , to the back of bis head pot , and then is ready fo...

€ Mxttf # ® mm [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 2 May 1868

€ \\ Mxttf # ® mm A Child s Dream of a Star . BY CUiBLES BIO-BBS . There was once a child , and he strolled about a good deal , and thought of a number of things . He had a sister , who was a child too , and his constant companion . These two used to wonder all day long . They wondered at the beauty of the flowers ; they wondered at the height and blueuess of the sky ; they wondered at tbe depth of the bright water ; . they wondered at tbe goodness and power of God who made the lovely world . They used to say to one another , sometimes , Supposing all the children upon tbe earth were to die , would the flowers , and the water , and the sky be sorry ? They believed they would be sorry . For , said they , the buds are the children of the flowers , and the little playful streams that gambol down the hill sides are the children of the water ; and the smallest bright specks , playing at hide and-seek in the sky all night , must surely be children of the stars ; and they would all be grie...

THE POULTRY YARD • Two Thousand Hens . I think of putting in a stock of 2 , 000 or 8 , 000 hens , and wish to post myself on the subject . Will you please inform me whether yon know of any one in the poultry business with whom I can correspond ? Have you any small book or pamphlet which treats on that subject ? What Is your own opinion ? Do you think it will pay ? G . S . B . Sonlh Bend , Ind . —Our correspondent Is not a subscriber to THE WEBTEBN RUBAL , or , we think , any other agricultural paper , or he would not have found it necessary to ask some of these questions . If he can atttend the next meeting of the Cook County , 111 ., Poultry Association , at Chicago , on the afternoon of Tuesday , May 12 , he will meet a good many men more or less engaged In the poultry business , and will hear a discussion on the management of poultry from which he would doubtless obtain much valuable information . THE APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 2 May 1868

THE APIARY Italian Bees . The Italian bees , as their name indicates , originated in the mountainous regions of Italy . They were first brought to this country in 1859 60 , and have been disseminated throughout a large part of the United States by breeding and selling queens and introducing them to colonies of native bees , and wherever cultivated their superiority Is frankly admitted . Mr . Langstroth-and I know of no better authority—after eight years experience with them , claims that they are better as honey-gathers-more peaceable in disposition , swarm earlier and oftener , are less disposed to rob , and are better to defend their stores from the attacks of robber bees and from the ravages of the bee moth than the common variety . Many of his claims are corroborated by the statements of bee-keepers who have had large experience with them , while as honey-gather-ers the testimony in their favor Is universal I will give a few extracts from the writings of parties who have them : ...
