A Ulond fop the Intellectual . It came under my eye somewhere the other clay that , in the wild enthusiasm for college athletics , there is danger of subordinating the intellectual to the merely physical , so that the student comes to give first place , in his thought and puipose , to physical development rather than mental expansion ; to athletic sports , rather than to intellectual discipline . And when one thinks of the intense fervor in behalf of physical sport prevailing throughout the student body of the land , finding all controlling outlet in foot ball , base ball , rowing , etc , thrilling the students almost to the heat of passion , exciting even the lethargic heart of the public to an amazing degree , attracting , in the laiger centers , thousands of paid spectators , running up the gate receipts to thousands of dollars , enriching the players , thus rivaling the great Olympic games of ancient days , receiving whole columns of detailed description in the daily press , evo...

A strong impetus should be given at college towards a correct use of English in our daily speech . Not a few of our students come from communities where bad grammar is almost universal and where even professional men , who are educated , surrender to prevailing bad practice . Unless young men have some conscience about this matter making them ashamed to be caught in expressions indicative of a lack of gentle breeding , the probability is that when college influence is removed the bad habits , only half corrected in the class-room , will reassert themselves and the graduate will find himself in danger of being classed with illiterates . We have known painful instances of this . Much can be done in the way of self improvement by an arrangement among students for mutual criticism and watchfulness in the less guarded moments of recreation . There is said to be a boarding club or mess among us that keeps this object in view and is attaining good results . Combinations against bad giammar...

Houi Shall We Observe the 22 nd ? Up to this time no move has been made towards arranging for the parade with which the students have for years been in the habit of celebrating the 22 nd of February . Why not have a good rousing time on Gcoige sbiithday ? Get out your hatchets , war-paint , etc . Although the time intervening is short , yet if energetic steps be taken we may have one of the best line ups we have ever had . On the evening ofthis the traditional Gettysburg Day , the Society of Pen and Sword will hold its first annual public election , which promises to be a pleasant and interesting occasion . Why not have the paiadc and make a full day of enjoyment ? Disagreeable weather spoiled airangements last year , but as the giunting weather prognosticator failed to see his shadow several days since , we may look for a sky over head in harmony with the spirit of the day . May the GmnsnuKGiAN suggest that a mass meeting , at which every student should be present , be held on Satu...
