POUIJTKY [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 October 1907
POUIJTKY TT is common to recommend about five I square feet oi floor- space for- each x fowl and about 50 square feet of yard room . You cant find much fault with this much floor spacfcy but the yard room is not haM enough / It is disgusting the way fowls are crowded together on fettle patches of dirty ground . Those who keep poultry in that way should be heartily ashamed of themselves . A little sun-flower seed occasionally wil } help gloss the plumage . : ; When a poultry keeper fails to make a success it is generally because he is too lazy or indiffernt to keep the poultry houses clean . Some of the best poultry men prefer Cellars for incubators . Unless the cellar is toodamp , - probably , the best general results are ; obtained in this way . If you find a soft shelled egg occasionally , you may know that the hens lack lime , or else they are being over-fed , or they are not getting the proper variety . More eggs have been received in New York city this spring than ever before i...

a Ljpg ^ efjSSSS ^ K ^^ oUrJtO ^ C ^ s Wr ^ te - mtn & s ) A SEVEN ROOM HOUSE A GOOD deal of comfort may be secured for eight or nine hundred dollars Hy building a house like this . Four rooms downstairs with three rooms in the roof , a bath room and two porches , briefly describes a house that is well arranged and convenient for a small family ..-. It is a house especially well adapted for the village , One reason why . this house can bebuilt , for so little money is that the work is all plain and straight The greatest cost , in building these days is labor . Carpenter , work is expensive , and all odd . corners and queer shapes cost money : Working on a gingerbread house is like plowing a narrow field crossways . You spend most of your time turning around instead of getting ahead and making a show for the amount of labor you are putting on the job . ,.- ; The rooms are large enough for comfort , and every one is well lighted . The style cannot be called pretty , but it...
WITHIN THE HOME OUtOLE [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 October 1907
WITHIN THE HOME OUtOLE • 14 - MRS . Whitsitt is very fond of getting letters direct from the farm ; they have the right flavor . Write her about your home , your joys and sorrows , and what you are doing to make others happy . • - He called for a city beautiful , He shouted it day by day , He wanted a city where noise was not ; Where the spirit of art should sway ,-- He wanted a city that should be fair , Whefe filth might never be seen , And forgot , in spite of the seal he had , To keep his back yard clean . There are great possibilities or beauty waiting to be brought to light m our back yards . Remove the ashes , clean out the old weed stalks , the old brush and boxes , rake it over and burn the trash , and when next spring comes makes it a thing ot beauty by planting vines along the old , weather-beaten fences and buildings ; nothing you can do for so little time and money will add so much to the appearance of the farmas a beautiful back yard . We can now take time by the forel...

Whitsitt about your play , your school and tlie good times you are Having . Address Mrs . Whitsitt , Farm Press , Chicago , 111 . QUEER COMPANIONS A dog , whose name was Don , was a great , fine looking fellow , and seemed to understand everything that was said to him ; he was very apt to run away , so we had a portion of thc yard fenced off for him to roam about in . One evening 1 thought I would go into the back yard and see how : Don was getting along . When I got near I noticed that Don was very intently watching something on the ground . Wondering what it could be , I approached quietly , and there lay a toad . Its little eyes were blinking rapidly , and were watching every movement of the big animal beside him . Poor little toad , I said , you are afraid you are going to be killed , but I will save you . So I pushed ...
