BIRO PROTECTORS [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 11 March 1880

BIRO PROTECTORS What has become of the Bird Protectors , we wonder . We dont see many more names added to the roll lately , though at the beginning of the year they came in briskly . Must we suppose that , like some other resolutions , the resolution to refrain from needless cruelty to animals is more readily taken at the beginning of the year ? We are sorry to say that we are constantly reminded by all sorts of painful disclosures , ot the necessity of societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals , and that these societies are to grown people , the Bird Protectors Society is expected to be to the young folks , who , if they can not do much active work in the cause , can at least cultivate gentleness and kindness to all creatures . The only new names we have to record at present are the following , by whom sent , however , we can not say : Mary Ellen Causdell , Laura J . Marshall , Kate Q . and Walter Herrington , of Willow Springs , Kansas , and Annie M . and Emma Hertzler , ...

MISCELLANEOUS [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 11 March 1880

MISCELLANEOUS THE LARGEST TUNNEL IN THE WORLD . The tunnel under Mount St . Gothard was completed at 9 o clock on the morning of February 29 th , ult The completion of this tunnel and of the Mount St . Gothard Railroad line , placed Italy and the Mediterranean in direct communication with Germany tia Switzerland , a result regarded as of no little political importance , in view of the alliance existing between Germany and Italy , and the fact that prior to the completion of this road , rail communication between these two countries was only to be had over roads passing either through France , regarded not unnaturally as a political enemy of Germany , or through Austria , the hereditary enemy of Italy . Political and commercial purposes have been subserved at the same time by the building of the St . Gothard road , as it forms by all odds • the most direct route between the Valley of the Rhine and the Mediterranean . A guarantee of $ 17 , 000 , 000 was offered by the governments of I...

CHAFF . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 11 March 1880

CHAFF . IT is no wonder tbat a miller soon gets gray , when on aU sides he bears innuendoes about toll . Here Is tbe latest one , paraphrased trom one of Watts Hymns : Teach me the measure of my grist , Thou maker of my meal , I would survey what I have missed And learn bow millers deal . See the vile miller lifts the pole , The mill begins to crawl , He keeps tbe grist , sends home the toll , And tells the boy that s all . What can I look or hope for , then , From miller s meal and dust , Who keeps a portion of ray grain And disappoints my trust Now all such millers Ill forsake , My empty bags recall , And give my custom to such men As send me back my all . —American Miller HEABTIESS I NGBATITOTB . —The Philadelp hia Medical Times quotes as an example of heartless ingratitude a case reported by Dr . L . Staton , in tne Maryland Medical Journal , vol . v . p . 891 , in which he injected an ounce and a half of chicken s blood into the femoral artery of a man apparently dying from exh...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 18 March 1880

AGRICULTURAL TILE DRAINAGE-HOW AND WHY IT IS BENEFICIAL . At the meeting of the Ohio Tile , Brick and Drainage Association held at Columbus , February 10 th . Dr . N . 8 . Townshend , of the Ohio Agricultural College , spoke as a farmer experienced in the use of tile . On the question of how to best promote the drainage interest , he said that one of the main things is to have tile sold at a less rate . Farmers figure up the cost of purchasing sufficient tile for an acre of land , are amazed at the amount and abandon the idea . With the outlay they can not believe that it will pay . There must also be more economy in the digging of drains for tile ; many make the ditches too wide ; men can work in narrow ditches and the cost will bemucli less . He said that we have two kinds of land that need drainage—the very wet and the very dry . We have a rainfall of 40 inches , which is removed by surface drainage if land is rolling ; it should be drained to avoid surface drainage . Another rea...
