A distinguished s<vant inhaled some of the fungus as an experiment and was rewarded forthwith by a vigorous attack of this malady. HAyis is backing down somewhat. When his New York appointments were defeated in the Senate his friends announced that lie would immediately make other appoint mients. The public are now in formed that the President deems it unwiso to renew his nominations at present. He evidently has not the grit and doggedness which so dit; tinguished his predecessor. wiNNSBORO, S. 0. Saturday, January 28, : 187. R. MEANS DAVIS, Editor, JNO. S. REYNOLDS, Assootato Editor. TiHE LEGIsLATURE is rushing m'it ters, in trying to elect six judgos on a week's notice. The judiciary is tho most important branch of the gov ernment; and a few days, in tho fevered condition of politics, is too short a time for mature dolibera tion. It is muich botter to postpone the courts for a while than to mako an unwise selection of judges who are to hold office for four years. IT Is A MATTER of regret that the Senate rejected the House bill to appropriato tho sum of twenty-fivo hundred dollars to the State Agri cultural and Mochanical Society. The advantages arising from an annual fair are too obvious to need mention. This small sum, while the Stato would not miss it, would ensure a handsome premium list every year, and, in this way, stimu late active competition. As Gon eral Gary well said in the course of debato, the fair is an agricultural school; and as agriculture i...
