Now that theDemocratic Nat ional Oclvention has met, nom inated a ticket and the mem bers gone home to work for its success, we propose to say a few words for that greatly *ronged andhighminded states man, Jamuel J. Tilden. In 1876 Mr. Tilden lead the Democratic party to victory but, as we all know, the party was cheated of its victory through the cunning of the Republican party, aided by the innocence of a number of Democrats fool ish enough to believe that atri bunal such as the Supreme Court of the Republic was in caple of so greata crime as per jury. In many instances the Dem ocratic press fell inte the snare prepared by the enemy and were unsparing in abuse to Mr. Til deuhesitating not to couiple his name with the vilest crime. This course had its effect on private individuals and it was not uncommon to hear threats that should the Democrats re nominate this gentleman they would throw their support for the Republican nominee.
