The Taftinder residence, adver tised in last Friday's News for sale, was sold at the price stated the fol lowing morning. Prof. Hodges bought it. Two other parties wanted it and from seeing that lit tle ad. It was worth the money and that little ad brought the buy er. Another man put a small ad in The News about having a house for sale not long ago. It was in some time and cost about four dol lars, perhaps, but that ad brought a buyer after awhile and the agent made over fifty dollars out of it. Good investment, wasn't it? Again, a subscriber informed our reporter the other day that on the strength of one of our ads in The News of one of our Hardware houses, that he went and got some prices compared them with his Chicago catalogue and found that he could do equally as well here if not better, and that he had bought his outfit, windmill, pipe, hose, etc...

CANYON CITY NEWS. MARCH 30. 1906. The Washburn Protest. The Washburn protest against Hie taking up of the Santa Fe track from there to Panhandle will he formed in full on the first page ef this paper. It will be seen from this protest that the citizens of Washburn and vicinity are acting upon the sup position that the railway company, and not Amarillo, is making the move against which they register their objections. This, from evidence amounting almost to proof, submitted to The News is clearly a mistake of fact. It is Amarillo and not the Santa Fe that is behind this project. True, Amarillo's interests would be decidedly advanced by the Pan handle cut-off; they, the Amarillo folks, are working to their advan tage and we to ours; it is legitimate altogether from a worldly stand point and neither side is to be blamed for coming the whole hog it it can. Such is commercial life and we mut take it so. Local Weather Record From Friday of last to and in cluding; Friday (publication day) o...

CANYON CITY NEWS. APRIL 6. 1906. WE AT II KH. Saturday Was a very nice day. Sunday Rather strong wind from the southwest but otherwise pleas ant weather. Monday Nice day and warm enough to go in shirt sleeves. Tuesday About lJ a. m a strong wind et in from the northeast and every indication pointed to rain or snow. Late evening it set in to raining and continued all night, lots of water fell. The ground was soaked and running over by morning. Nothing more advantageous could have happened to small grain and j fallow ground, the newly set out trees and early gardens; but it must have been a fearful ex perience for stock exposed on the bare prairies; many a poor plains brute will fail to see the daisies of this year on account of Tuesday night's exposure. Some people, beyond doubt, will answer at the rinal judg ment for their treatment of the dumb animals. Canyon City New VOL X. CANYON CITY, RANDALL CO., TEXAS, FRIDAY. APRIL 20. 1906. NO. e i. If DUELING STORIES. A Combat That Won Applause In th Time of Charles IX. In its mediaeval form dueling was a 6erious ail'air. The loser waa not only regarded as under the di vine displeasure, but as the abso lute property of the victor. He might be hanged or kept prisoner or handed over for disposal to the lady in the case. De Fendilles refused to enter the lists till he had seen a fire lighted and a gallows made ready to hang and burn his enemy after the victory he made so sure of. Another method of the time's barbarism was to drag the beaten man around the field, dead or alive. Even Bayard complied with this most unchivalrous custom. There were doctors of dueling, who were consulted just as were advocates of law, and the institution became en tangled in the intricacies of red tape. The regulation about the choice of anus gave rise to many abuses. A case much admired at the time was that of two...
