...LOCAL TOPICS Monday was Chinese New Year and was duly celebrated by the Ritzville Celestials. In the Flowery Kingdom the festivities last about two weeks, but in the United States a few days is considered sufficient. New York, San Francisco and Portland are the princi pal cities in the country where the Chinese New Year is patriotically - observed. Firecrackers by the case are exploded; Oriental cordials and gin llow like water with chrysanthe mum tea for "chasers;" every Chinese has his head shaved, takes a bath and attires himself in the most expensive garments his purse will allow. Armed with blood-red visiting cards, he goes forth to greet his fellow countrymen and have a glorious time. The Chris tianized Chinese aro supposed to fast on the first day of the New Year, but it is not infrequent that they forget themselves. Mr. Henry Bierman and Miss Hed wig Labes, eldest daughter of Charles Labes, were married at the home of the bride's parents north of Lind, Thurs day, Feb. 14,...

In the ensuing skirmish the poor rooster was done up, and it is said that the young couple are so elated over the success of their first united effort that they intend to fight all their battles to gether hereafter. ...LOCAL TOPICS Tin U'.slo Tom's Cabin Co. gave a pcor o«v F.iday night to a splendid house. With such a fine audience we are at a loss to understand why they should have rendered so rank a per formance. Had they opened the show at 8:30, the regular time, instead ol , an hour earlier and not omitted the specialties and last act of that great drama, and taken the morning passen ger, which, if they had carried oui their contract, would have been their train, then the fearful accident cost ing the lives of four of their troupe, would iu all probability have been averted. The manager of the com pany further displayed his utter disre gard of the eternal fitness of things after the horror occurred by reporting no casualties and undertook to carry out his engagement at Missoula Sat urday night, which was finally can celled, but requiring some pressure to do so. The outfit needed a kick suffi cient to jar their organization and they doubtless got it at Horse Plains, Mout., when they discove...
