MONROE, LA., OCTOBER 20, 1872. Carpet-llaggers. No men ever had a more noble op portunity of doing good and raising themselves to a high niche in the tem pie of fame, than the class contcmtu ously styled at the South Carpet-Bag gers. There is no disgrace in having all one's worldly possessions in a car pet-bag, nor in seeking one's sphere of usefulness and success in anew place with an outfit so slender. Whittington, the famous merchant prince and Lord Mayor of great London-a name dear to every child in Brittain-was, when he arrived in that city, a carpet-bag ger, only without the bag. Franklin was, we suppose, little better equipped when he reached Philadelphia, and doubtless hundreds who no rank among the merchant princes of New York, came here in similar circumstances. But none of these had such opportuni ties as the Northern men who went South at the close of the war. Nearly one-half of the population had just been emancipated from slavery, and elevated to the privileges of citi...

wuachita Zeleqapl. M bONROE, LA., NOVEMBER 2, 1872. Home Art. The first condition of success in furn ishing either a large or small room is that there must be no overcrowding. This is absolute. . When outline is lost, beauty, as a matter of fact, is lost also. We must all know many drawing rooms in which, perhapsthe worth and beauty of each individual thing is indisputable, on entering which the first thing that strikes one is a sense of incongruity. What migh have been an art collection is degraded to the level ofan old curios ity shop. Most women are born with a love of beauty. But generally, unless this love is cultivated and trained, it runs to waste, and fritters itself away Upon small things. Women go into a shop and hover over a counter for an hour, engrossed in the purchase of fifty small things, each one of which is pret ty enough in itself if taken up in the hand and inspected; but not one of which can be clearly defined at a dis tance of twoyards, and not one of which repa...

MONROE, LA., NOVEMBER%, 1872. 0. W. MceRANIE. Editor. RESULTS OF THE ELECTION. We may safely congratulate the peo ple upon the fact that the election is over; for, the issue, whatever it may be, has brought to rich and poor, high and low, successful and unsuccessful a sense of genuine relief. The hard fought struggle is over; somebody, it is true, has been hurt, and we may hear groans and sighs of the wounded and dying, but all this was inevitable, and we can only hope that the sufferers will die like heroes and make as de cent and respectable corpses as the na ture of their several cases will allow. Looking abroad over the "Natidn," we are constrained to bow our editorial head reverentially, in token of sorrow for the defeat of our gallant old leader, Horace Greeley. - And we are notne the less sorrowful because we never had any confidence in his election and be lieved his nomination a blunder froln the start. Mr. Greeley has nobly done his duty, battling against a power no man eve...

MONROE, LA., NOVEMBER 16, 1872. 0. W. Uq@RAmIr. ldltoer. The Intelligeneer and the Editor of the Telegraph. Our neighbor of the Intelligenecr has found a regular squealing worm, and no old hen ever made more noise than he over the discovery. The election of his former pal, we know very well, is not half so acceptable to him as the defeat of Capt. McCranie. Of that gen tleman he has published a hundred Humnes to where he has one for Senator Kellogg or against Col. McEnery. And even yet the Intelligoncer does not appear to know that any one has been defeated or was running for office, but the editor of this paper. In that paper of Wednesday a labored effort is made to show that Capt. McCranie was not the choice of the people and run behind his ticket in the parishes on Caldwell, Ouachita and Richland. It seems that this is the very sweetest morsel our cotemporary can possibly gather from the results of Monday's route. It appears to console him for the loss of the Governor, other State...
