fc niter's gfparfmtnt A Beautiful Extract The fol lowing paragraph is from the Wis consin Farmen lo the majority of men we are satisfied that the soil is only dirt; bu to the chemist who knows its origin, its nature and its capabili ties, it h a wonderful mixture of those beautiful elements which in their ever varying forms be come the ambient air, the liquid ocean, the precious diamond; or the delicate blue bell and the vio let, the amaranth, the rose-bud, the spear of blue grass and the ce dar of Lebanon; or again the ru by lip, the lovelit eye, the noble palpitating heart, and yet more wonderful brain! These" are the jewels of which the soil is compo sed, and out of which the hus bandman so unheetlingly strives to force the food hunger craves. Draining Slops from Houses. I shall, without attempting to dis parage. the judgment or the prac tice of otheis, proceed to describe the plan which I have adopted, in order to avoid, on the one hand, the unsightly and inconvenient ac cumulation of ice near the kitchen dooi in the winter; rnd on the other the still more offensive efllu via from the sink gutter in the summer. The water is conducted from the wash trough into the drain below, through the two inch lead pipe some two and a half feet long, and so curved as ,o always allow it to stand full of water, which is, of course, displaced by each successive deposit, thus for bidding the ingress of cold air, or the return of noxiou3 gases from the cesspool below. It will be ob served that to secure the advan tages of this arrangement, the drain must be carefully closed around the insertion of the pipe. The drain is made of brick, with a fall of nearly an inch to the foot "f nd sufficiently deep under ground to protect it from freezing...

re 1 &(jt 1 farmer's Department. Causes of-Fertility in Soils. In a a recent letter to the N. Y. Farmer's Club, Prof. S. W. John son, of Yale College, says: The labors of chemists to dis cover positively all the causes of the fertility of soils, have not yet met with conclusive success. The mechanical construction of soils is of . primary importance. Naked rock grovs lichen; the same rock ;crnshed into course grain crrows ft much higher order of vegetable; pulverized fine, the cereals grow in i. Geology eliemivtry, bota- nyl physiology, meteorology, me chanics, hydronamics, heat, light, and electricity are all intimately combined in the grand process of vegetation. There are eandv soils m our Eastern States, which, with out manure, yield meagre crops of 'rye and buckwheat; but there are sandy soils in Ohio, which, with out manure, yield on an average 80 bushels of Indian corn an acre, and'have yielded for the last 20 to 50 year? in un unbroken suc cession, the ingredients of the...

Messrs Roukds & LAXGDOxare our only authorized advertising Agents for Chicago. The Editorial Convention, "Which was held at this place last Tuesday 14th, proved tcbe i more interesting gath ering than was anticipated by the fraterni ty. There wero 2S delegates in attend ance, representing 23 papers. Tho ad dress, by Dr. Ellis, of Goshen, was the finest we ever listened to. It was replete with good, wholesome, practical truths, which the craft would do well to take heed unto. The volunteer speeches were ex cellent, and the resoluüons ditto. The free dinner at tho Edwr.rds House was creditable to the energy And liberality of the host, and wa3 undoubtedly the best table ever set in town. Thoso who attend ed the dance speak of it in the most flattering- terms. This, as the first convention of the kind in Northern Indiana, ha been the mean...
