Phonics is one of these approaches that has come and gone the most. Teaching phonics is teaching a child to iden- tify and recognize the sound each letter in a word represents, so that he can know the word by linking those sounds to- gether to "sound it out." Phonics is definitely in fashion at Elgin's prim- ary school now, and it is largely due to the wishes of Elgin teachers, not ex- pens who are outside the classroom. Included are long- bladed knife and more than 10 ounces of marijuana. —Times Photo SMITHVILLE — Sharp observ- ation by two Smithville patrolmen led to the arrest of two Houston men here early Saturday for posses- sion of more than 10 ounces of mari- juana. Stephen R Hammon, 17, and Mike Allan Hicks, 17, both of Houston, were charged with pos- session of more than four ounces of marijuana. Ferguson, coach of the Elgin High School base- ball team had reason to be proud And relieved. Only moments earlier, the Wildcats had complet- ed a dramatic 6-1 win over San Antonio Cole to win the Region 6 A A baseball crown, the highest achievement possible lor them this year. Stifled by a stubborn Cole defense, the Wild cats erupted for Five eighth inning runs to break open the cxtra- inning affair at the Fair ground Park. Elgin was leading 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Cole rallied to tie the game and send it into another frame. The Boer family moved into the house, located about two miles south of Rockne in 1909.
