4 TT17 ATTTO17C! HSUBrand JC IldAL UJXJIO September 8 1992 WWWWIW ...... ..(.fMin.vn.!! ..-.-.-HBHMpiH lt! There is a silent majority of students on campus and their num- bers are strong. Perhaps they sit next to you in class or chapel and look a little too mature to wear a beanie. Who are these people and why should we care? These people are non-traditional students and their numbers are growing. Many are juggling school and work and families. Some have reared their families and are returning to cam- pus life eager to get an education. But why should we care that they are here? The mature student can offer an added dimension of life experiences and insights to class- room discussions and campus ac- tivities. Bridge the gap and lend a hand to this new breed of Fresh- man. Who knows when you're homesick for a home-cooked meal I bet I know of at least one person (ME) who would gladly trade you for acouple of hours of babysitting ! Seriously though HSU is ea- gerto help all of its stud...

8 FEATURES HSU Brand September 8 1992 FRESHMAN FEARS by Laura As a new freshman I have experienced some feel- ings I have never before felt: some cold prickly feelings and some warm fuzzy ones but each essential to the growing process. I can't remember a time that I've ever felt as fright- ened as I did the first night or .- orientation. My parents had left me all alone. I knew no one. Sure I had met many people and they all seemed friendly but I really didn't know anyone. Never have I felt so alone. Almost angry with my parents for deserting me I was left with only a teddy bear as my sense of se- curity. Yet how quickly the tables turned! At our orientation family meeting that evening I not only met but really got to know and understand my brothers and sisters. It was comforting to find that some of them felt as insecure and as apprehensive as I did. Too I met more and more friends as the week continued. Although terribly lonely. . the first evening I would not trade the close life...

4 FEATURES September IS 1992 Non-Traditional Networking by JiU Cleckler One of the most difficult challenges for a college student is deciding on a major. There are so many choices! How do you go from field of interest to mar- ketable skills? Perhaps one of the best places to start is the office of Student Development Under the direction of Dr. Michael Whitchom the staff lends tremendous support to stu- dents in a variety of services. Linda Carleton dean of stu- dents and Brian Bluhm associ- ate dean of students are the guid- ing forces for students seeking assistance for career planning. Aptitude testing is offered (at no extra charge) for students who are uncertain where .their aca- demic and vocational strengths lie. Selecting a course of study is the first step in planning your degree. Many students change their majors at least twice some- times three times or more be- fore selecting their final plan of action. If you are muddling through the muck of basic courses don't despair!...

September 15 1992 FEATURES Mudslinging by Sara Allsup Hike up your pants and get ready to wade through the murky waters of the 1992 Presidential Campaign. With only a little over two months to go until election day the political campaign is in full swing. Historically politicians have not dealt with straight answers nothing to them is as simple as black and white. They live in the gray areas that leave them plenty of room for exaggerations un- truths and down right lies. It is our duty as Americans to see past this and dig deep beneath layers of rhetoric to discover the truth. The two main candidates for the 1992 Presidential election are President George Bush Re- publican and Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton Democrat The follow- ing are a few of the issues that are of importance in the elec- tion and a brief synopsis of where the candidates stand on each one as derived form US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT. 6 FEATURES September 15 1992 Smaller University Opens Transfer Student's Mind by Steve Zimmer In modern day America people are constantly bombarded with the idea that bigger is bet- ter. Whether size is determined physically in realms such as ath- letics or in a non-physical sense such as financial values are of- ten based in relation to depth height and width. Some people might have this view when look- ing at aUniversity. Those people need a dose of reality. I am a junior transfer from the University of Kentucky (U.K.) in Lexington. While it is not an Ohio State or USC at 23000 students it is a large uni- versity. I transferred to Hardin- Simmons University because of head baseball coach Dr. Marvin Stringfellow. I came to visit the campus last spring as a guest of the baseball team. My weekend visit and the couple of weeks that I have spent here have been an eye opener for one who did not know what to expect out of a smaller university. One of the first things that impressed me wa...
