MEETING. PUBLIC MEETING AT ZEEHAN. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 19 January 1891

MEETING. PUBLIC MEETING AT ZEEHAN. A meeting of the residents of Zeehan took place on Saturday evening in Anderson's Large Room, at which, fully 300 persons were present. Mr Sinclair was voted to the chair, and briefly stated the object of the meeting to be the calling of the attention of Mr Pillinger, the Hon. the Minister for Lands and Works to the following requirements and disabilities of Zeehan, and proceeded to say, ;' The absolute necessity for the finishing of the Strahan-Zeelian liailway before the settiug-in of the winter season was imperatively necessary, and he would respectfully call tlio attention of the Minis ter for Lauds aud Works to the fact that although iiftettn mooths had elapsed since the letting of the contract, a distance of only 12 miles had been constructed. The enormous disadvantage under which Com panies labored in their endeavours to get machinery and requisites into the field was appalling, owing to the bad state of tlie harbours and the terribly backwa...

Strahan and Zeehan Railway. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 19 January 1891

Strahan and Zeehan Hallway. In reply to representations made by Messrs Nicholas Brown, H. I. liooke, and W. Fitzgerald Moore on their return from the West Coast a few weeks ago (says the ' Mercury'), the Minister of Lands has forwarded to the member of Cumberland the following copy of memorandum from the Engineer-in-Chief : — ' For months past I have urced contractors aud engineers to use the most strenuous efforts possible for pushing on tbe works, and gave them in structions to begin working from Zeehan end also. Contractors always express their eager desire to push the work, but plead the impossibility of securing and retaining' sufficient labour, owing to the inducements of the mine6 and prospecting — the check and difficulty experienced owing to strike and the wet weather — and the unpractic ability of getting plant and stores up to Zeehan, and partly on account of state of road. Now that winter is over, I have given notice again to drive the work ahead at all speed, and shall ...

Correspondence. TO THE EDITOR. GRIEVANCES. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 19 January 1891

Correspondence. TO THE KD1TOH. GRIEVANCES. Sin, — Through the columns of your much-read paper, I would like to aee a few of our grievances ventilated. Firstly— What do Government intend doing with regard to the Zeehiin-Dundas Road. It is now a month since tenders were to have been accepted, and still nothing is heard of it. Surely the present fair weather, and ao many men in search of work ought to make it a favorable timo for pushing on with the work. Secondly — How much longer will tho people be satisfied with the present mode of issuing permits and resi dential licences. Have we nobody in Zeehan capable ol: looking alter these rnat tevs, instead of. dragging men down to Strahan, as at prjsent. occasioning loss of time and money. Trusting some abler pen than mine will agitato this matter to a successful issue, and thanking you in anti cipation—Yours etc., 11ATA.

THE Zeehan & Dundas Herald. MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 1891. SANITATION. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 19 January 1891

THIS ' Far the caoss thtt tecki Mstsiance For the wrong that need! resistance For the future Is th« distance Ajod the good that we can do.' MONDAY. JANUARY 19, 1891. SANITATION. Without doubt the insanitary condition of our town calls for immediate atten tion, and that of the most vigorous, practical, and positive character. To comfort ourselves with the impres sion that what has been good enough for the few hundred inhabitants who established themselves hereabouts pre vious to or during the past winter, is still sufficient— is simply trusting trust ing to a fool's paradise. Doubtless, there are few better or mow perfect deodorisers or detergents than the earth itself. Again, it costs nothing to apply, and is everywhere available, and, being an active absorbent, -requires but little more than that all offensive matter shall be brought into contact with it to render the latter com paritively harmless and unobjectionable. At first, and in the absence of drains, little injury may be do...
