The Art of Penmanship. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 22 August 1891

The Art of Penmanship. Writing boing the means of transmit ting one's thoughts and actionB to others iB surely the most important feature in our education, more particularly in the odncation of a business man, and yet, strange to say, it is a featuro most woe fully neglected in this land of the Sunny South. How oftuu on picking up a letter from a man we have never seen do we elevate our critical eyebrows and ex clnun Ah 1 here a an illiterate and vulgar sort of fellow,' while aa a matter of fact ho may be a polished man of science. Now, this is not a ploasant thing to have said about one, oven by a stranger. Many young men know to their cost how often an application for an appointmont is committed to the W.P.B. solely on account of tho manner in which it is written. To a young man who wants to succeed in any branoh of pro fessional or commorcial life a good clear hand possessing some diameter is abso lutely a tine qua non, and yet our schools in their enthusiasm for higher (?) studi...

The defeated candidate jii the late Shnalhaven election cannot yet take his gruel. We are sorry for this for a two fold reason — firstly, because wo had thought that however much the canny Snni lnvflR a frond round nrmimenr. the loser's own common souse would lead him to bury the hatchet ; and, secondly, be cause he persists in discounting through Ait' 'own journal the character of the Member-elect in a way which is not reason able, manly, charitable, nor yet just, and in a style altogether which another man would not think of adopting if he sought to set-off the chances of the Member at the next, election. In last Wednesday's Shoalhaven Telegraph (the defeated candi date $ journal) there is published a short account of a debate in the Assembly upon a resolution by Sib Henbt Pabkes as to a. certain standing order of the House. This article is introduced by some dozen lines' headed ' Shoalhaven's ' Brilliant ' Member,' 'HumiliatingDispUy in Parlia ment,' and states that ' the Member ...

The Electoral Reform Bill. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 29 August 1891

The Electoral Reform Sill. In the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday evening - hon members turned their attention to the great measure of the day, the Electoral Re form Bill. Tho enactment was taken up by the committee at clause 13, a soction which details the methods in which electors' rights are to be issued. The certificates of voting right are to bo printed in red ink upon paper specially marked to prevent fraudulent imitation. Mr. Traill seemed to think that paper was too . perishable a sub stance to be used lor' such a purpose, and recommended parchment. The Premier, complacent as usual, promised to give the parchment v. paper ques tion his consideration, and, if necessary, to re-commit the clause. As there were no points of principle involved, the section was allowed to go through quietly. The next clause, No. 14, provided more material for discussion, and its complicated nature rendered it extremely difficult to arrive 'at any satisfactory settlement. Thb whole point ntissue ...
