TRACTION INCREASER [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 6 December 1890

TRACTION INCREASER An electric traction increasor for augment Ing the tractive power of locomotive engines, inVehted by Mr. E. E. Hies, of Baltimore, has just been tested with satisfactory results on the Philadelphia and Beading Railroad. The trials were mado on the Frackvillo grade, rising 165 feet per milo. The apparatus con sists of a small dynamo and cngino mounted . upon tho locomotiyo and furnishing an efectrio current, which is passed from tho forward to tho rear driving wheels, through that portion of tho track rails lying between slicro, oAUBing an ljicfGAsod friction between the wheels and the rails, which is claimed to bo far superior to that obtained by sanding the tracks. With tho dynamo running and . ? ? train of forty-five carriages attached to tho locomotive, the ascent was made in 28min., while without the current a trip over the same ground, with the same train behind, required 55 minutes. SCIENTIFIC ANEW KIND OF TELEPHONE An attempt is about to ba mado in Glasgow to introduce a now telephone, styled ' The ' \ Pulsion,' The telephone 1b a purely ' mechanical ono, and is exceedingly simple in construction, merely consisting of a Btcol indlarubber lined button, to which tho Annealed steel wire is attached, a copper diaphragm and ' sound-conducting springs. HOW TO MAKE LEATHER. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 6 December 1890

HOW TO MAKE LEATHER. I The growing scaroity of oak bark, and the substitution of all sorts of chemical agencies in .'?h6 production of leather leads a clever £0ien.*ist to ask whether there are any othor ?vegetable produots to fill the place. Till the last 12 years oak was indispensable in ship building, but iron has been almost entirely substituted for it, especially in vessels driven by steam. In the ordinary course of eventB this should have given some respite to the oak forests of the United States, bat the growing demand for oak furniture in tho houses of tho rioh has so thinned out the timber that it promises to become as costly ? 1 ? _— nm UIhaL- nrnlnnf All tAtilt n# I '. cultivating oak for tanning purposes must be I ? abandoned, but the coming material is tho I .Australian wattle.' SOVEREIGNS MELTED FOR JEWELLERY. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 6 December 1890

SOVEREIGNS MELTED FOR JEWELLERY. It 1b computed that from 14,000 to 10,000 persona are actively engaged in tho jeweller; trade of Birmingham, and tho amount of capital embarked in it is larger than that of any othor Birmingham industry. The annual consumption of gold is in vnluo £750,000, and of silver £850,000. Sovereigns are still extensivoly used for 'molting up' instead of grain gold, and tho question is frequently put by tho uninitiated. ' Whercforo is this VAfttA ? ' Tifit Mr. .Tnhn Urnrrff. wlin iannrhnne tho best authority on tho subject, supply his answer. Mr. Bragg says that the cost of minting is so Email that against tho other advantages attaching to tho practice it is of no account. Tho grain gold of commerce cannot, ho says, be relied upon for absolute freedom from accidental or superfluous alloy. By the use of coins uniform hardness, tenacity, and ductility aro — which are of the utmost importance to some branches of tho itrade— absolutely guaranteed. The metal Surgic...
