MINERS' MEMORIAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 30 December 1876

MINERS' MEMORIAL. ' It is doubtless still fresh within the recollec tion of our readers that some weeks back a meeting of miners was held in the Temper ance Hall, pursuant to advertisement, 'to discuss the necessity for bringing under the notice of the Honorable the Minister for Mines the immediate requirements of the mining industry in this district,' and they are also aware of the result of the labours of the committee so far, a draft of the memorial to Mr. John Lucas having appeared in our columns. Since then the following answer has been received, a reply to the various sub jeers mooted by the committee that we cannot consider other than highly satisfactory. We append the? letter without any remarks be yond the above brief ones, but shall most probably have a more favourable opportunity for commenting upon its principal features ere long. ' Department of Mines, 'Sydney, 19fch December, 1876.. ' Gentleman, — I have the honor, by direc tion of the Secretary for Mines, to acknow le...

CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 30 December 1876

CRICKET. A rather hastily-arranged, but exceedingly well-contested one-innings match was played on the cricket ground, on Wednesday afternoon last, between eleven of the Grenfell C. C. and fifteen of tho recently-formed Prince of Wales' Club, resulting in a victory for the former by two runs. The elder club representatives were sent to the wickets first, where they ran np a score of 58, of which 17 were credited to sundries, while W. Matthews with 12, and Hogg and Ryan with 10 each, were the only ones who got into double 'figures. Tho Fifteen were disposed of for 56, tho bowling of Hogg and Ryan doing great execution, and Tippett was the top scorer, with 10. We hear there is a probability of another match being shortly arranged, as the conquered club are not satisfied with their defeat. The following aro the scores : — Grenfell C. C. Bruce, b Logan ... ... ' ... ... 0 Brennan, 1 b w, b Tippett ... .. . ? ? ? 0 Hogg, b Log.in ... ... ... ? ... 10 Ryan, c Williams, b Fitzgerald, ,y 10...

A SLIGHT ERROR. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 30 December 1876

A SLIGHT ERROR. A stranger to Grenfell and its surroundings, after a perusal of an advertisement that ap pears in this issue under the heading of ' Medical — Caution to Practitioners,' would naturally conjecture that the place could be little else than the merest hamlet, or, as it has once been termed, ' a small agricultural village,' whose meagre population, as shown by the 222 names in tho directory of 1872, and which it is asserted have not increased since then, could afford but slight occupation to any business person. Wo are willing, however, to placo tho most favourable con struction upon the assertion, to hold that it was made in utter ignorance of what the dis trict has been even since its more palmy days; but we must confess that tho statement was made, if not wilfully and with tho intention of misleading, at least without due attention to facts, facts that could readily have been procured from and vouched for by any of our older residents. Of course, compilers of directori...
