The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, JULY 22, 1880. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 22 July 1880

Vic Iiaragli 6 uarbian. TIIUR'DAY, JULY 22, 1ls0. TUtE political situation is the topic of conversation and thought at the pre sent moment, and to express a tithe of the thoughts ongendered by the sulject Woulid occupy more than the space at our disposal. But we shall devote a few remuarks to the leading ideas which would guide our more lengthy utterances if space permittedl. in the first place then, the Liberals won the day on the 14th, and the other side takes its defeat very un kindly. They are crying about the Catholic vote, about which they make a great to-do. If there is such a thing as a Catholic vote, which we very much doubt, the Conservatives h:d it last time, so it was only fair that the Liberals should have it on this ocua sion. But we say that those people who talk about the Catholic vote as if no Catholic had a. will of his own do the Catholics a great injustice. "We do not say that "t large majority would not be advised by their pastors if they thought that the welfre...

CORRESPONTDENCE. THE NEW SHIRE COUNCIL. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. Snm,-As the ratepayers within the four ridings of the Shire will soon have an op portunity of selecting persons to represent our interests in the "reformed" Council, it is to he hoped that they will make their choice in such a manner that, when formed, it can be said that we hare men in it who have not sought the position for self-ag grandisement, but those who only occupy the post for the purpose of seeing the re. quirements of each part of tile Shire fairly and impartially attended to. Let us have men of intellect and sound judgment, and none of those whose only desire is to enter upon long-winded discussions for the sake of hearing themselves speak, and to delay and obstruct as much as possible the further ance of any works with which they are not directly interesteLd Order at the Council fable has been lost, and must be restored; and to enable us to restore it we must have meni of education, ability and integ...

CONSERVATIVE DODGES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 22 July 1880

CONSERVATIVE DODGES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. Sma,-Now that the elections are over, it is to be hoped that the results will not be allowed to pass away into oblivion without an acknowledgement, at least, being made of the many very delicate (?) attentions paid to South Gippsland as a constituency, both prior to, and during the contest, in or der to corrupt-I beg pardon-to win over the votes of the electors to the Conservative side. From the exceptionally "desperate efforts" that were made, and the "tremen jus" attentions Ikatwere lavished upon us, were we at all conceited, we might almost be tempted to think the Service Govern ment were desirous of securing the appro bation of this electorate more than any other. But this would be too great a com pliment to appropriate. Still there is no denying the plethora of civilities and re gard manifested for our good wishes. First we had the Minister of Public Works tra velling about the district, scattering pro smises " by inference" i...

CORRESPONDENCE. THE CLAIMS OF POOWONG. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1880

CORUlitESPONDENCE. THE CLAIMS OF POOWONG. TO THIE EDITror OF THE Gt'ARDItAN. SI,--As a visitor to Drouin at the last sitting ;of the Shire Council I was witness to an act of great injustice towards the far off district of Poowong. A gentlemau at tended on behanif of two meetings of rate. rayers at that place to apply for either one or two polling places at Poowoug. as they wished to put up - menu:ber for the Coun cil at the August elections. lie stated tha.t the meetings were unanimous in making the application. Cr. tMurphy had, earlier in the day, made a similar application to the Council. The majority of the Council. however, having first rejected Cr. Murphy's motion, with an equally fine sense of jus tice, refused the reasonable and respectful re;luest of the gentleman deputed by the mectings. I believe the idea of the sapient gentlemen who formed tihe majority in the Council was that, by keeping Poowong without a councillor, it will be possible to persuade the Minister of Public...

NARRACAN SHIRE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1880

NARRACAN SHIRE ELECTION. A good attendance put in an appear ance at Love's Hotel, Waterloo, on. Monday evening last to hear the views of Mr' A. T. Wright, who has been in duced to enter the coming contest for the vacancies in the Shire Council. In opening, Mr. Wright stated that he felt cmuch flattered by the invita tion he had received, but regretted it had not been made earlier, as he had made business arrangements which ne cessitated his absence from the colony prior to the election. IHe then re ferred to the fact that he was one of the earliest pioneers of the district. and had made it his permanent home, therefore he had the welfare of the Shire entirely at heart. lie detailed next the circumstances surrounding the formatiou iif the Shire, the broken promises of the Government, the pre rent plosition and future prospects. Ie assured the ratepayers that he- did not covet the name of Shire council lor, but in the event of being returned lie would faithfully fulfill the duties dev...

THE DROUIN NEWSPAPER'S ATTACK ON COUNCILLOR SMITH. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1880

THE DR?OUIN NEWSPAPER'S AT TACK ON COUNCILLOR SMITH. TO TIlE EDITOR OF THIE OUARDIAN. SiR,-A spiteful attack was made upon me last week in your Drouin contemporary, in the hope, as it appears, of interfering with the chances of my election to a seat in the new Shire Council. Unless, however, I au much mistaken, it will have the oppo site effect; for the fact that I have incurred the hearty dislike of the Drouin paper is pretty strong proof that I have done my best for the ratepayers of the eastern Rid ings. In three distinct parts of the paper I am rated at, and the following charges brought against me:-l. That I endeavored to prevent a number of ratepayers from voting at the coming elections. 2. That I have done nothing for the district except thq work done on the first few miles of the roadul leading north from Wa:rragul. I will take the first of these charges first. The charge is based on the fact that at the Rlevision Court held at Drouin on the 16th of this month, I objected to...

FRIGHTFUL SCENE AT THE OPERA HOUSE. ATTEMPTED DOUBLE MURDER AND SUICIDE. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1880

FRIIGHITFUL SCENE AT THE .OPERA IIOUSE. ATTEMPTED DOUBLE MURDERI AND SUICIDE. There has hardly been an occanion since the evening on which President Lincoln fell a victim to a bullet ficed by Robert Booth in Lord's Theatre,. in the city of Wrashinigton, whenran aud'i ence in a place of entertsinment was so thoroughly moved and a city a i tated as were the people whlo uwen present in the Opera hOIIse on S.tinr day night and the citizens who were in the vicinity, when John James 1ec Gregor Greer shot his wife, .Annice Greer, and Louis Soudry, who was sitting with her, and then attempted to commit suicide. It is almost im possibile to depict the intense excite ment which the incident caused throughout the city, the occurrence bursting upon the populace with al most electrifying suddenness. THE SCENE IN TIIHE THEATRE. The work which was being per formed when the occurrllece amazed the audience was Meyerbeer's Gli Ugo notti (The IlHuguenlots.) AN EXPLANATION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 29 July 1880

AN EXPLANATION. TO TIIE EDITOR OF TIIHE GUARDIAN. Sir,-I feel called upon to send you these lines with a view to correct an erroneous impression produced on the mind of rate payers here by a paragraph which appeared in your issue of the 22nd, and which, when read with the meagre report of council meeting, makes it appear that I am about to abandon all further efforts on behalf of the shire, whilst in reality I propose to renew them at the earliest possible moment, although differently directed. Your comment also upon the "manly and independent tone" of Cr Varey in de precating the idea of outside assistance whilst opposing my motion, as a matter of course, reblcts a want of these attributes on iny part. The statement made in respect to rates and salaries places matters in too favourable a light. But, allowing it to be correct, is it not utterly absurd to deem it possible to develope a district like this on ia ..00) rate, with present subsidy added? Whcu we look at our tracks, many o...
