Current Items A young man named Charles Gnnther did not long enjoy the new born year. He, in company with another man took a couple of horses down to West's pad dock at. Five Dock, on New Year's Day, with, the intention of giving them a swim. After riding into the water for - some distance the animal Gnnther was mounted on became frightened, reared ? up several times and eventually fell .. backwards. Both horse and rider sank tinder the water, but while the former rose quickly the latter was not seen again alive, and his body 'was not recovered for some hours afterwards. Deceased was only 25 years cf age, and was in the employ of Mr. West, the contractor. An inquest held on Satur day resulted in a verdict to the effect that Gunther was accidentally drowned. Friday. January 9. 1885. (Before Mr. Johnston, S.M.) Clara Booth, -for .-.using obscene language, was fined 20s or seven days. Summons Cases. Edwin Smith v. Archibald Dickson, assault, A good deal of evidence was taken, but the magistrate did not consider it conclusive and dismissed the case.' ' John Graham v. William Dwyer, William Bow. William Ward.1 Thomas Ward. Henrv Robertson and John McGanley, boys ranging, from fourteen to 'eigntcen years of age. This was a case of damage to property, the defen dants having thrown, stones on the roof of plaintiff's house and damaged the iron. Dwyer was fined 5s and £1 lis lOd costs, and the others were each' fined^lOs with os lOd costs and oneguinea complainant's costs.
