An Up-to-date Suggestion. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 19 November 1897

An Up-to-date Suggestion. I told her I could never speak the words I fain would speak, That every time I tried it on my courage sprang a leak « That when I gazed into her orbs, blue as the skies above. Mv coward lips refused to voice the story of my love. She gazed at me with sympathy in her expressive eyes, ' .. .. . # And once or twice her bosom heaved with quite emphatic sighs. Then, with a nice, becoming blush and in a tender tone, She said, ' Perhaps you'd better call me up by tele phone !'

Theatrical Management. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 19 November 1897

Theatrical Management. Perhaps the greatest 'diffibnlty that fa&s theatrical management, .at- any ra'e one of the ' most^rfcant ob^acles to his success, ist.be found in the taste of the public. We rv nl means intend to in inuatn that it is defied fr or unsound, or that even at times ? it does rior assert itself in an advantageous and 7 com mendable manner ; but we think our re.dors ' ^-^s when ™ fc ^at too often .-.juuguiBuuoiaaauiienceia uncertain and its favour capricious. Triumph and failure -do not always depend upon the merit and short comings of author or actor ; there is something beyond desert, as Sempronu. was told that commands success, and fools would riot rush in where angels fear to tread if they had 'not noticed that their kind had gone the same way before with impunity. An audience, seeks amusement ; this is the test of its encm~ mem ; it the entertainment should prove false to its name, the chances are that it will £efc but little attention and still less mer...

Watches as Compasses. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 19 November 1897

Watches as Compasses. ; : The following useful bit of information is:: probably new to many : — All watches are com passes. In explanation : Point the hour hand, to the sun, and the south is half way between, the hour and the figure XII on the watch. For instance, suppose that it is 4 o'clock.: Point the hand indicating 4 to the sun, and II( on the watch is exactly south. Suppose that* it is 8 o clock, point the hand indicating 8 to the sun, and the figure X on the watch is due;, south. Verities of the . simplest character are also the most impressive ones. We hear vjbienli every day and regard them as trite ; yet they always bear repetition. Religiously speaking ;. Your duties as a Je-v admit of no argument, . they are plain and plausible, and if we remind you of them again and again, it is done, nofr for the purpose of merely filling up our spaca with stale matter, but -with the honest intention of benefiting you. as well as the sacred causa of Judaism. — 'The American Israelite.'...

The Physician and his Patient. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 19 November 1897

The Physician and l\is Patient. Doctor Sylva, one of the most celebrated doctors of the seventeenth century, was nomi nated physician in ordinary to the civic author ities of Bordeaux. The appointment was much censured by a portion of the inhabitants. They could not apply the slightest reproach to the physician ; on the contrary, none had more science, devotedness, and conscientiousness , than Dr. Sylva. But he had one defect, an unpardonable one, and which ought forsooth to have precluded him from being a public fun ctionary — he was ' a Jew ' ; and religious prejudices were so inveterate in the minds of the inhabitants,, that the epithet '? Jew ' wag to them tantamount to an indignity. Amongst the adversaries of Sylva, a Marquis particularly distinguished himself. His oppo sition, and endeavours to drive the physician from his appointment, were only interrupted by an attack of malignant fever The disease confined him to his bed, and went on slowly consuming him, and bringing him g...

What to Teach our Sons. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 19 November 1897

What to Teacfy our Sons. A set of' oracular maxims concerning ' What to Teach our Daughters,' has been going the rounds of the papers, Is not this thing over done ? Almost every country paper has a paragraph in the same strain. Pray tell us who has made the bread and the shirts, and ' cooked the victuals,' and darned the stock ings, etc., all this time, if not the daughters of ' the land ? How long since the virtues of in dustry, thrift, and good management have been so monopolized by the son* and so neglected by the daughters as to justify thi* continual grind ing out of advice and admpnition, as monoton ous as the rumbling of the wheels in our streets, and ss ' tedious as twice told tales?' We believe in fair play and equal rights, and see no reason why such Sir Oracles should ex pend so much wisdom and solicitude upon the education of the girls, and ignore the needs of the boys, who ought to have a share. For in stance, when the daughters mtist be taught to ' wear calico dresses ...

CO-OPERATION IN TEA. AN IMPORTANT CHANGE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 19 November 1897

CO-OPERATION IN TEA. AN IMPORTANT CHANGE. The idea of co-operation is in the air. The visit of the English delegates from the co operative societies of the home land, is now bearing fruit. We have been slow in grasping the idea of co-operation, but now that it has taken root we may expect great development. One of the first great firms to adopt the idea, is the firm 01 Atcherley & Dawson, the tamous tea dealers of Sydney. This is alarge, enterprising and well known firm, and what they purpose doing is bravely seMorth in our advertising columns. They ask a larg en umber of people to take £1 shares in a limited liability company. They don't want one or two peop e to take up all the shares, there would be no business in that. What they want is to get people who use tea — - and most people do that — to become share holders in. the company, buy their tea from the company, get a bonus in every pound of tea they buy, and share in the profits of the deal. Atcherley & Dawson ...
