CHAPTER IV. LEILA IS AFRAID. I. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 1 April 1914

| CHAPTER IV. LEILA IS AFRAID. I. A seaman, would havo helped Leila up tho ladder, but Hugh pushed him aside almost savagely. There was a good electric light just above the gangway, and it showed him .the figure of a woman wrapped in along Shetland coat; of a child whoso face could hardly bo seen for the fur cap which covered his black curls. And yet he would have known Leila and Desdy had the place, been black as night. She had come to him—ho never doubted that she would not return.. A small kit-bag was all the lug gage she carried, and ho perceived that her hand trembled very much, and closed so nervously upon its handle that, the seaman could hardly take it frqni her. .When Hugh had led her to the upper deck, she stared about her with the. haunted look of a woman pursued, but chiefly over towards the town of Newcastle, from which she had fled. What he said to her he never knew ; he tried to tell her that she was welcome to tho ship, but it was many minutes be fore the man himself ...

LEILA AND HER LOVER ' By MAX PEMBERTON. Published by Arrangement with Ward, Lock and Co. Ltd., Load, and Melb. !. (All Rights Reserved.) XV. It was almost dinner-timo when the Archdeacon returned to the yacht, and ho had but the briefest word with Hugh. "A very difficult case," ho said, evasively. "I am quite at a loss, my dear fellow." His further pro mise to discuss the wholo. thing j frankly at a later hour of tho night sent the young baronet to his cabin with the vague hope of a man who relies rather upon a friend than upon himself. He did not tell the worthy ecclesiastic just how intoler able the hours' of waiting had been, or how difficult he had found tho commonest conventions. They talked of many things at dinner—Jack Bowles of Freddy By water's straight and narrow .ways iind the half-crowns they were cost ing him; Hat Michel of politicians and tho new taxes he was not called upon to pay ; the Archdeacon chiefly of the products of the Moselle Val ley. COUNTRYSIDE CHANGED WOOD TORN UP FOR GOLF LINKS [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 1 April 1914

COUNTRYSIDE CHANGED WOOD TORN' UP FOR GOLF LINKS In that part of the London suburbs between Shirley and Kcston ramblers have long known a countryside—with out saying much about !t — which might have been primitive Hampshire or Sussex (says "The Daily News and Leader" of January 10). It has leis urely footpaths, far from the call of motor horns, which range woods where in an hours' walk one may meet none but a few natives about their woodland affairs. But at present a lot of it, instead of resembling more secluded England, looks like nothing so much as a Can adian lumber camp. Tho saunterer who happens upon It could think him self not two miles only from Croydon High-street, but among the pioneers who are clearing the wilderness. No less than four square - miles of old tvoodland is being felled. A STROLIi IKTO 'CANADA Out of West Wlckham Station a "Dally News" rambler found noth ing but a land containing scat tered inns, farms, rooks, and, of course, some concentrated golfers. All el...

The late Mr Justin M'CarlhJ' ""00 described, in an article in "The *cu' York Outlook," the impression '!y Mr Joseph Chamberlain's first speech the House of Commons. The Tories, he wrote, were expecting to see a rough and shaggy man, dressed wit)' an un couth disregard for the ways of society, a sort of Birmingham Orson -wlio would probably scowl fiercely at his opponents and would deliver his opinions in tones cf thunder. The man who rose to ad dress the House was a pale, blonder, delicate-looking and closely-shaven per sonage, very neatly dressed, with short and carefully-brushed hair, and wear ing a dainty eyeglass. , "lie looks like a ladies' doctor," one stout Tory mur mured. "Seems like the model of a head clerk at a West End draper's," observed another. -As to tlu; maiden speech Itself, Mr M'Carthy mailed that it made a distinct impression on the House, and Mr Chamberlain s position there was thereafter assured.
