LOOKING BACK. THE LIVERPOOL JOCKEY CLUB MEETING. [Newspaper Article] — Referee — 17 February 1887

LOOKING BACK. THE LIVERPOOL JOCKEY CLUB MEETING ('Bt Early Bird.1 The meeting of the above club, which took place on this old historic course, oil Saturday last, was x,cr'laPs ^l0 IB03'' succcssful gathering that lie's taken placc for many a long day. Fairly fine weather, together witli judicious adver tising, may, in a great measure have much to. do with this desired result, but whether those are the causes or not. the fact remains that it was so, ancl 1 am sure that every pressman joins with me in wishing Mr. i?aine and his committee ' many happy returns of the day.' The train was not delayed beyond its ?proper time of departure at lJedfern, and considering the demand for accommoda tion, and the fact that several carriages more than had been anticipated had to be attached, the official in charge at the Sydney Station fulfilled his duties satis factorily. But everything did not go quite as ' merrily as a marriage bell,' for delays occurred on the outward journey owing to the locomo...

SPORTING NEWS. A match is arranged to take place at Minmi on Saturday next, between Little Dick and Mabel. The Balranald Pacing Club has , an nounced its annual meeting for April 11 and 12. A liberid programme is promised. St. Patrick's Day has been selected by the Moama Jockey Ulub for its next meeting, when eight races will be com peted for. Though the prizes are not very large, still the sports of this district evidently like plenty for their money. Cobargo Jockey Club is in the field with a nice little programme for March 17, dished up as follows: — Maiden Plate, 12 sovs; : - Cobargo Handicap, 25 sovs. ; Flying Handicap, 10 sovs. ; Members' Handicap, 15. sovs..; and Consolation Stakes, 5 sovs. A rumour is going abroad in England to tliej following effect: — It is strange but true that Archer's [death was fore told. LEISURE TO READ. [Newspaper Article] — Referee — 17 February 1887

LEISURE TO READ. What greater boon is there on Sunday to anyone than a Sunday paper ? No better proof is needed of the popularity of Sunday journalism than the extraordi- j nary and phenomenal success of The Sunday Times, which has now a circula- j tion in Sydney and suburbs larger than that of either of the leading dailies. Ad vertisers should take this fact well to heart, and they will soon begin to appre ciate' at its full value the importance of The Sunday Times as a medium for their announcements. ? ? ?

JOHN FIELDER, THE LIGHTWEIGHT RIDER. [Newspaper Article] — Referee — 17 February 1887

JOHN FIELDER, THE LIGHT WEIGHT RIDER. What our Victorian friends claim for Gorry we of New South Wales are equally en titled to claim for Johnny Fielder, the well known light-weight jockey, who is only 12 year8jOld. He is depicted in the above pieture'-'in his father's colours — red jacket and white easli — which he has so frequently carried to the front-. A lad whose history in connection with the turf is more remarkable it would be impossible to liuu, as his name and prowess in the saddle has become the theme of admiration with every one who has fallen across his path. To our knowledge, there is not a rider in the world who started so early as he did, having gained winning honours at the age of six years, and before this time had a horse killed under him while exercising. He also possesses the admirable qualifica tions of quietude and honesty, character istics which are perhaps due to the ex cellent example set the lad by his parents, who keep a strict watch over him in all his mo...
