Then the influence of State College was limited. Now you reach out into pract ically every county in the Commonwealth. Your influence is widespread and you stand for all that is vigorous and progressive in this great and mighty Co nmonwealth. Nor is this accidental. Your trustees in 1882 builded better than they knew. They saw the field , they measured the possibilities and in the selection of a president they secured to th e College and the Comm onwealth the services of one who has wrought an influence upon education throughout the State second to none. In congratulating you upon your rap id growth and splendid development , ...

is not in all history a single record of true greatness or meal nobility hut has been the result of uns dltish devotion to princ _mp le and to truth. 1-lad Linco n Sec OUt to be great and to acquire fame h e would have f alk n tar shart of the pinnacle his me.nory now occup ies. I-lad _Washingion wit hstood the perils and discomiorts ot Valley Forge for mere fame he would not have f ound so secure a lodgement in the hearts of his Countrymen. The same may be said of the Adamses, Jefferson , Franklin, _iviorris. Albert Gallatin and of our _l_4_cI ~ _iii ~ey, and the great list ot those who might be named who. put love of God and of Country and humanity, over and above selt advancement or p ~ ivate gain. History is macic up of biography, and there is no more he ptui or inter esting biogmaphy any where outside ot Holy Writ th’àn that of Lincain.
