Basketball team to improve, Smitley says By Jerry Trently Capitol Campus' basketball team will be a conference contender, according to Capitol's Director of Recreation and Athletics, Bud Smitley. Smitley predicts the Lions will win the keystone Athletic Conference title, despite their recent seven-game losing streak. Coach Charlie Bowen stressed the team's average of 35 turnovers a game over the first nine games as the reason for the team's losses., "We just can't expect to stay in our games if we give up the ball as many times as we have," Bowen said after a December 8 loss to conference rival, Alvernia College. Two wins highlight volleyballers' season [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 December 1983

Two wins highlight volleyballers' season By Rob Rejmaniak Recently, the Capitol sports fan witnessed a steady improvement in the way the teams here have fared in their respective leagues. For the girls volleyball team, the 1983 fall season was no different. The team enjoyed its finest season ever. Although the team's final record stood at only two wins and seven losses, this record was a marked improvement from years past. In fact, until this season, the team had never won a match. This season's schedule had more games than any of the previous seasons. Head Coach Yvonne Harhigh sees this as something positive. "Two years ago our season consisted of one match," she said, "so the schedule alone shows how far we've come." This year's team consisted of eight girls, seven of whom are juniors and will be returning next year. Harhigh stressed the importance of having more girls on the squad for next season. "I'm hoping that because we hav...

Jogathon here called a success [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 16 December 1983

Jogathon here called a success By Rob Rejmaniak Capitol campus' second annual Jogathon, held Nov. 19, was once again a success. This year's 30 participants raised approximately $1500. The purpose of the annual run is to raise money for the overall improvement of sports on campus. Clarence Hardaway, a maintenance man here on campus, was this year's top moneymaker, running 27 laps for over $400. Athletic Director Bud Smitley was second in proceeds, making $300 for his 36 laps. Good participation from the girls volleyball team, men's basketball team, and cross country team, helped make the Jogathon the success it was. "Our goal for next year is $3000," said Smitley, who sees next year's goal as a realistic one. "The twilight baseball team and the rugby team from the area use our facilities here and next year those teams will be responsible for paying a $500 rent for that use," Smitley said, adding: "If they choose to raise the money in the Jogathon, we should have 100 runners i...
