tiMMt [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 July 1906

tiMMt See that the calf gets good sweet milk every day . It only takes a very small amount of butter color if any when the pastures are once good . Dont send over colored butter to market . Wouldnt it be a great convenience right now to have some of that ice that was considered too much of a nuisance to be put up last winter . If the cows get in the habit of not coming home at evening and always seem to want to go to the neighbors , there is a possibility that the neighbor has some sort of an attraction in the barn which you have not . A well filled salt box or a little feed in the racks will usually bring the cows up in the evening . See that the calves get good treatment . Dont tether them out in the front of the yard and forget to give them water and milk . When there are only one or two small calves on the farm , these calves Usually have a pretty hard life , especially when the hot weather comes on . The milk yield drops off very rapidly this time of the year unless the cows ha...

F * RESH WATE * R PEA'RL [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 August 1906

F * RESH WATE * R PEARL Up . and down the White River m Arkansas are scattered the camps of the pearl fishers . The industry is not new in that , section of the country , but the supply of pearls is still sufficient to bring fresh enthusiasts to the field every summer . It is a pleasant outdoor life and many adopt it as a means of restoring health or of gaining an outing and an income at the same time . The pearls are imbedded in the flesh of clams that live at the bottom of the river , so the first process in pearl fishing is to catch the clams . These are taken to the camps and steamed just enough to open the shells . Then the search for pearls begins , each clam being carefully examined . If a pearl is found the fisher folds it in a bit of paper , or puts it in a little tin box , tucking it safely in his vest pocket . The shells are sorted and the best are sold to button factories at $ 8 . 00 to $ 20 . 00 a ton . the poorest are sold for about $ 4 . 00 a ton to be ground into fee...

HATTy HILL FAHM [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 August 1906

HATTy HILL FAHM • ay MUS . c . c . WOUTEHS . CHAPTER VIII . AUGUST ACTIVITIES . I would like to go over to Grandma Mack s tomorrow , John , said Mary , one hot Saturday early in August . This sultry weather is almost too much for me , and I havent done any sewing to speak of , so I think I must try to get Edith over to help me , if Grandma can spare her . All right , girlie : I m glad you ve made up your mind to get help , was her husband s reply . So the next afternoon saw . them dressed in their Sunday best , visiting their neighbor , Mrs .
