WHEAT RULES WEAK [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 17 January 1902

WHEAT RULES WEAK Anticipated Call For Margins Caused An Early Decline . CABLES FAVOR CORN PRICES Provision Prices Were Influenced By Stronger Turn In Hogs At The Yards . The wheat movement was reactionary again today . Atter opening at 80 . « it dropped to 79 % under the persistent hammering of the bears . The fears of some holders that some ofthe brokers would not be able to meet the heavy calls for margins induced them to let go of wheat and this was also a cause for the decline . However , the promptness of tbe brokers in putting up their margins was reassuring and the market rallied before noon and closed at the opening figures . Higher cable reports caused an advance in corn quotations . May corn opened at 03 ; Vc and sold steady up to 64 c flat . Trade was comparatively active on both futures with the bulk of the trading in May delivery between 63 } £ -Xc . July .. opened at WitiAie and sold up to 63 ^ c . POOR MAN'S PLACE . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 17 January 1902

POOR MANS PLACE . He Can Carve Out a Fortune In the Arkansas Valley . 3 IOXEY IN BEET CULTURE . Western K .-insus B ing Populated By a New Class of Farmers . SIKCIAI . HHRVlCK LIVE STOCK WOULD . Garden City , Kansas , Jan . 13—Hereabouts the wind mill is as prominent acd distinguishing a feature of the landscape as the rich lowlands of Holland . Without it Western Kan-ias would be an arid des * . ert for the Arkansas river as an irrigating agent has forever lost its usefulness . Costly ditches , meandering over the rich bottoms are dry as tlio throat of a Chicago alderman and will probably never again experience saturation . Once the Arkansas rolled a creditable stream toward the sea ; now it is met only when the huge reservoirs further up the stream in Coloratio overflow and tlie capacity of these is being constantly increased . This loss of water has been a serious blow to alfalfa raising and although Kansas sufferes by Colorado enterprise , have carrind the mat-, ter to the court...

yi Frtgtd 'Route . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 17 January 1902

yi Frtgtd Route . VB 1 UK Canadian cousins are again agitatiBJ ing the practicability of the Hudson s Bay route to Europe . The trouble with that line of travel is that the temperature is too frigid . Summer in the vicinity of Hudson s Bay is noted mainly for its brevity . It lasts about as lone as a fiye furlong horse race . • Possibly if the road is constructed a train might get over the route ¦ ¦ between late spring and early fall , but it would be well to make preparations in advance of collecting about five hundred St . Bernard dogs and a large supply of Arctic stimulants to be placed on file along the line where they can be got at without a moment s delay . There is a subduedness in the Chicago atmosphere this morning tliat makes hreathing difficult . The Woman s Club has suddenly settled the Farson-Wiles letter controversy , and the suddenness of the thing is what makes us feel short of breath . This Farson-Wiles letter business threatened for a whole year to disrupt the Woma...

Com Breeding Important . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 17 January 1902

Com Breeding Important . I MPROVED live stock was not long since the butt of ridicule . Xow the tune has changed . Practical and intelligent men assert that improved grain will prove equally profitable to the American farmer . They have beeu experimenting for a number of years with gratifying , in faet surprising results especially with corn liaving already demonstrated that the yield per acre may be largely increased . Did it ever occur to you that an additional five bushels per acre would be that much clear profit ? In the aggregate this would be an immense sum in a state like Illinois or Iowa . If you cannot breed somo improved corn yourself get some pedigreed seed and raise enough to plant your entire crop in 1903 . This is no chimerical project . It means additional revenue for every farmer in the corn belt and the eost will be insignificant . , n
