MY CA . LL AT HARVARD . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 January 1876

MY CA . LL AT HARVARD . IN spite of my impatience , I decided to walk . I crossed the long bridge that spans the Ocean s arm stretching between Cambridge and Boston , and soon found myself in the vicinity of the oldest endowed institution of learning in this country . Away back in 1636 the seed was first talked about , and two years later the Rev . John Harvard planted seven bundled pounds sterling ( equal to about $ 40 , 000 in greenbacks of to-day , ) which , fertilized by the proceeds of licensed lotteries , fat cattle , silver plate , books , corn and other gifts of land and treasure , and cultivated by the long line of educators beginning with Prex Dunster , and including the illustrious Mather , Everett , Sparks and others , has grown into an immense perennial plant , yielding fruit at all seasons . As I walked along the street , which is thickly built up , and seems properly a part of Boston , I could hot help thinking that I could see Harvard better if there were not so many...

INSECTIVOROUS PLANTS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

INSECTIVOROUS PLANTS . IN his book bearing the above title , Mr . Darwin has given to the scientific world a great amount of valuable knowledge , which was acquired by observations extending through fourteen years . As is known to all , he is a close and careful observer , and nowhere does his accurate painstaking labor show to better purpose than in this , his last work . While he does not explain the movements themselves , he gives us the phenomena accompanying them in such a plain and interesting manner , that one feels an enthusiasm for the man and the work . He began his observations in order to determine if plants caught insects , because they were insects and says I was surprised by finding how large a number of insects were caught by the leaves of the common sun de \ i ( Drosera rotundifolia ) on a sheath in Sussex The main results of his experiments , he states , are firstly , the extraordinary sensitiveness of the glands ; secondly , the power of rendering soluble , digest...

A PORTION OF THE PROBLEM OF LIFE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

A PORTION OF THE PROBLEM OF LIFE . YOUNG men fail ! Men of intellect , of genius ! This is the bitter experience of every thinker , of those who even carelessly investigate th e causes of social phenomena , or trace the lines of retrogression and progression in Man . It manifests more vividly in the youth of a highly refined and civilized state , than in those of a lower order of civilization . The reason is very evident . The keen , high developed sensibilitity of the man , moving in the upper spaces is hurt , painfully hurc by the indications that would scarcely stir the savage heart . And moreover in the higher stages of social advance the fall is accelerated and rendered despicaole , often irretrievable , by the sense of shame which attaches to it . On the contrary in the lower planes of humanity , the sense of infamy attached to crime is less acute , and therefore the ostracism less frequent and severe . Why this failure ? Why this premature crumbling away of that God-like stru...

ILLINI CORRESPONDENCE . NEVADA & c . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 February 1876

ILLINI CORRESPONDENCE . NEVADA & c . BY HOTE FOR some time I have been promising myself that I would write a letter to the ILLINI telling its readers of the portion of Uncle Sam s dominions called Nevada , and now I come to the fulfillment of the promise . Were I to tell all that could be said of the state , the sagebush plains , treeless valleys , barren mountains , the famous silver mines and quartz mills , the plucky and enterprising people with manners and customs so strange to all new comers , —if I were to tell you all , the story would be beyond the limited space allowed ILLINI correspondents . The mines alone properly described and explained would make matter enough for volumes . Nevada justly claims to have the greatest mineral wealth of any state in the Union , and it is that wealth alone that gives to it the prosperity that marks its progress . As to agriculture the state makes no pretension 1 ! whatever , and in one year does not produce one-tenth the quantit...
