«__» * J * tsfb What Science May Do [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

«__» * J * tsfb What Science May Do SCIENCE HAS DONE so much to improve farming methods that wc are . prepared to believe the most extravagant claims , though it is fair to say that not every claim makes good in the application . The farmer s principal risk comes from uncertain weather . The brazen skies in a few short weeks of drought will blast his hopes of harvest . On the other hand , excess of moisture is quite as much to be dreaded . A few hours of flooding rain may destroy a whole seasons work . Is there any way to control the dements so as to remove these losses ? The scientist who can do the trick will be elected for canonization in our hall of saints . Sir Oliver Lodge , the distinguished physicist ( who a few months ago gave us the word of a scientist respecting the future life ) , in a recent address suggested the possibility of obtaining some measure of control over the weather . If clearing weather , he said , is due to electricity , it may be imagined that men can acq...

This Month [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

This Month Keep the strawberries mulched . Winter spraying can be done this month . Never another winter on the farm without that silo ! Alter farming cannot be bestowed . It must be abjured . If some nice open days happen , why not plow ? Youll be that much ahead . February is the last month before March . Better be planning the spring work . It is not too early to think of next year s vegetables . Plan to have a hot bed . Better farming means more to the generation that follows you than to yourself . Handle the colts ; a little attention every day will give less trouble in breaking later . Last call for seeing that the harness are in perfect condition to start the spring work . When the weather permits get the manure onto the land . That s where , it belongs and where it does most good . Stable the dairy cows on rough days . Feed used to light cold , snows and high winds never gets to the cream crock . Keep the pig troughs clean and free from ice . Feed no frozen swill . Just clea...

** J » < # A Man of Moral Courage [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

** J » < # A Man of Moral Courage WE DO NOT have to go back to the so-called heroic age for examples of courage . It is good to find them in the papers of this present day and we do not always find them in the list of heroes who are awarded the Carnegie medals . A week or two ago a man died in Paris who was every inch a hero . He displayed a courage that was more difficult because it was moral courage and compelled him to go counter to popular opinion and to the opinion of his dearest friends . He was the man who saved Dreyfus from an ignominious and undeserved banishment to Devil s Island . General Picquart , before he undertook his fight , was the most popular man in France . He had reached a high place in the army . He shared with the army and with nine-tenths of France the dislike and prejudice and race hatred against Dreyfus and his Semitic race . One day he was led to suspect that Dreyfus was an innocent victim of conspiracy . It was not Picquarts business to right ...

Wise Men From the West [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

Wise Men From the West THE EAST from earliest times was supposed to be the reservoir of wisdom but that was before agricultural science occupied its present proud position . The western sharks in this line of education are now mostly trained in the west . Not long ago Edwin L . Holton , leader of rural education in Kansas , was called by the governor of Maryland to investigate country life conditions in that state and to report to the legislature in January . A few days ago I happened to read a school publication coming from one of our large western universities and in the column of graduate notes I was surprised to see how many of the alumni were now filling places of distinction in eastern schools and eastern business . Not only this , I was equally surprised in visiting one of our large state universities a few months * ago to meet a large number of students who have come from eastern colleges to take their post-graduate work in the west . If we who were born and raised in this w...

J » J » J * Strathcona [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

J » J » J * Strathcona A GREAT MAN died in London the other day . He might be called the biggest farmer in the world , at least he owned more land than any other single individual . He went to Canada as a sixteen-year-old boy ; that is , to * ^ Iew Canada , when farms were a thousand miles apart . He grew up with the country and when he died he owned land enough to make farms bigger than a county in his native Scotland . But it is not as a farmer that Lord Strathcona appealed to our admiration . He was a man of magnificent moral sense . A large part of his wealth was invested in railroads . He was one of the largest owners of Canadian Pacific , but his wealth did not make him greedy nor hard . There is a story of a poor widow who had a cause of action against the railroad in which he was a large owner . She won her case at every successive trial in the lower courts but each time the case was appealed by her wealthy adversary . At last her means were exhausted , when the corporation ...

Down On The Farm [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

Down On The Farm This Gem is Taken From Our Scrap-Book Says old man Haskins , with a frown , That there ain t much use movin to town , And crowdin into a four-room flat Where there aint nuff room to hang your hat . Where eggs cost about a nickel a-piece And butter is about like axle grease . We gotta admit there s a lot of charm In living right out on the good old farm . When the wife and children want to go And see a good movin picture show , When they re shoin a pertickler fancy reel I kin git em there quick in the oatmobile . The town folks ain t got nothin on us , In spite of all their show and fuss We got plumbin all through our place , And fine washstands fer your hands and face . A bathtub , too , we can fill right quick , And we don t have to go jump in the crick . So fur as the days news is concerned Theres durned few things we Havent learned About as sudden as one-two-three , For we ve got a party phone , you see , And we are never late in gettin our mails , For the rural ...

Hoes Without Corn [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

Hoes Without Corn SUCCESSFUL HOG RAISING has been confined la / gely to the corn belt . In fact it is generally supposed that without corn , or its substitute , in the form of peanuts , acorns , etc ., hog rawing is practically impossible . It may be of interest to the readers of this paper to know that their Editor has just sent to the market approximately $ 2 , 000 . 00 worth of fat hogs from a Montana ranch in which he is interested , and they have never seen an ear of corn nor tasted a toothsome kernel . They were run on alfalfa pasture almost from the day of their birth , being kept in small lots until they were large enough to rustle for themselves , and when barley was harvested in August , they were turned into the stubble where they picked up a fine living from the waste grain , and before Thanksgiving they weighed in at an average of 172 pounds and sold for approximately $ 15 . 00 apiece live weight in the markets at Butte . We have found that even in the Middle States whe...

v * a * J » Long Life [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

v * a * J » Long Life IN THE JOURNAL of the American Medical Association we read an interesting article giving the mortality rates in the different occupations . We will not take the space to present all the figures . The significant facts are that the highest mortality is found among saloon keepers and bartenders and the lowest among those engaged in outdoor occupations . The farmer , therefore , has a right to expectancy of a longer life than any other class and it is a fact that we see more people of advanced years in the country than in the city ; but it requires something besides sunshine and fresh air to insure long life . A Russian scientist has discovered that senility or old age is caused by parasitic bacteria in the digestive canal of the human body . If this poison could be cleared from the system , he claims that one would not grow old in the ordinary sense , but would live to be 100 or 120 in full enjoyment of vigor . He proposes a simple and inexpensive cure .-Curdled ...

Looking For No Snap [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

Looking For No Snap THE LATE president of the New York Central , Mr W C . Brown , on retiring from the heavy burdens of his office , announced that he would now fulfill the hopes of his life by becoming a real farmer and would spend the remaining days mostly at his farm home in Iowa . We welcome Mr ; - Brown to the ranks of active agriculture , and will take this occasion to repeat a story of his early life , which ought to be read by every young man who is looking for an easy path to the goal of success . Mr . Brown , of course , was not always president of a railway ; in fact , as a very young boy he began railroading as a helper to a section gang in Iowa . One day the superintendent of that branch of the road stopped at a station where the section men were piling up ties . He noticed that a young fellow of about sixteen years of age was Handling more wood than the huskiest hiberman in the bunch . He was a fair faced youth and looked scarcely lit for such heavy labor . The superin...

No Panic This Year [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

No Panic This Year IT BEGINS to really look as though the dire forebodings of the pessimist were groundless . A year ago this gentry began to tiptoe through the streetrwhispering confidently that it was the part of wisdom to prepare for hard times which would surely engulf us before the geese flew south in the autumn . This panic was originally timed for September 1 , but it was repeatedly postponed , the tariff bill went through without a serious surgical operation , the new currency law followed and we are well ushered into the new year still safe and sound . The timid ones who sought the cyclone cellars are creeping out one by one with as little noise as possible . Their timidity of last year reminds us of the lady who took her first ride in an elevator to the topfloor of one of our tall office buildings . She asked the operator nervously : What would happen if the rope which holds US « 6 h ? l d ere re a « ? other safety ropes , he replied But if they should all break , where wo...

Worth Remembering [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 February 1914

Worth Remembering Is there anything grander than living to keep others from dying forever . One of the chief aims of the devil is to distort the image of God in men . Love is the only thing that will use an enemy completely up . _»» jl » _*• 350 * 000 IT WAS QUITE a little pleasure we had last month in stating at the top of our title page that Se circulation of B ETTER F ARMING for January was 350 , 000 copies . It is no less for February and we are beginning to suspect it will -be no less but more for every succeeding month . We appreciate the fine support which our great constituency has given us the past year , and we will do our level £ rt to deserve it in the year before us It would Helitrht us if we could publish all of the letters whfh our friends are sending testifying to their appreciation of this paper . These words of praise Te IppareUtly not inspired by the fact that BETTER FARMING merely tells us how to farm better , but because we strive equally hard to . suggest how ¦...
