j Southdown Sheep j [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 February 1901

j Southdown Sheep j Raise a crop of Southdown lambs for the spring market , and then fatten and sell the ewes , If you do not wish to keep them , and net a good 50 per cent profit on the investment . The demand for mutton is growing every day . It is the most healthful of meats . While you are growing the lamb and mutton you are also growing the fleece which pays for the raising . Clean the racks every time you feed and give the stubs to the colts . They will keep fat on them . Examine the feet of the sheep and see if the sole is filled with filth . They should be kept clean and the ragged horn shorn off and the toes clipped . Be particular about water . Sheep must have free access to pure water if you expect them to thrive . The Southdown will carry from 2 , 000 to 2 , 500 fibers of wool per square inch on the shoulder . Every good mutton market in the world will testify to the claims of the Southdown as a sheep that will turn the food consumed into the highestpriced product . CARE...

The breeding pens have been mated at least two weeks and the Incubator or broody hen is now in demand . Chicks hatched during the last days of February or the first of March will give you some trouble to raise during the cold and wet weather of spring , but the size of the birds and the early maturity of the pullets will pay you good returns . If you have not fed animal food in the form of green bone , you can expect poor hatches , dead in the shell , weakly chicks , and a high rate of mortality from your hatches . From a list of one thousand inquiries , sent to poultrymen , eighty per cent admit that they did not use fresh green cut bone in their ration . They all tell the same story , lack of vitality , weak chicks and the loss of from f...
