Cure for Scours . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
Cure for Scours . Dundee , N . Y . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —One of the most common troubles with the litters at this time of the year and frequently the most serious trouble is scours . This is likely to occur soon after birth and during the suckling period , more particularly when the pigs are commencing to eat and about weaning time . The most effective remedy we have ever used for scours while the pigs were nursing is copperas , fed through the dam . We fill a quart fruit jar half full of copperas , fill up with water and give a tablespoonful of this solution to the sow in her mess till scouring has stopped . This will usually do the business . Of course the contributing causes are damp nests , over feeding and sour feed . The pens may be sprinkled with air slacked lime and dry straw provided ; and in severe cases feed the dam nothing but sweet skim milk for two or three feeds , with the copperas solution . We formerly had lots of trouble when the li...
One Thing at a Time . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
One Thing at a Time . This time , it is six magnificent daughters of Kinloch Rival , the son of Lord Premier s Rival , bred to Maximus 121000 , the outstanding son of Masterpiece , that the Lippincott Pure-Bred Stock Farms of Lima , Ohio , are offering . These young sows and gilts will be bred for early fall farrow , and will make a good addition to any well established herd , no matter how good it is . They will be sold on terms that beginners can afford to pay . The owners insist on good individuality first , and then a good pedigree . Drop them a line if in need of any young stock . A Beginner . McCarley , Miss . Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —I have sold everything that , I have to offer . I am a begin ner with Berkshires . I note some of the Berkshire breeders place their wives first , and their Berkshires next . It is different with me , as t have no wife , my Berkshire comes first , I am the only one in this County that has pure bred Berkshires . My neighb...
From Pabst Farm . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
From Pabst Farm . Oconomowoc , Wis . The Berkshire World , Springfield , III . Dear Sir : —Thought I would drop you a few lines to inform you of the arrival of our recent purchase , Masterpiece Charmer 2 d , wiliom we bought from 0 . C . Van . Doren , Loami , 111 ., to breed to our Lord Premiers Rival gilts . He is a very good individual , with the true Masterpiece head , strong straight back , standing on the best of legs , with enough bone to satisfy the most fastidious . He is a son of Masterpiece 77000 , and out of Lady Oxford 6 th 77910 by Lord Oxford 15 th 75988 . Our old herd boar Burwood s Rival Premier 117730 whose sire was the famous Lord Premier Rival , is just two years old , and I think will compare very favorably 5 with the best boars of the breed in the country . His stock are all uniformly good , with splendid size , and he has sired this season 83 pigs out of nine sows which speaks very well for his prepotency . We have ten of his gilts from last summer s farrow , w...
"Sal-Vet" Does the Work . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
Sal-Vet Does the Work . I think you have the best kind of a remedy for all kinds of stock . I have been feeding Sal-Vet to my mules , horses , hogs and milk cows , and they are all in fine condition now . My neighbors have spoken , of the fine appearance of my mules , noticing that they were fatter than ever before . I told them that I had been feeding Sal-Vet and only half the usual amount of feed . UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
I Can t Raise Them Fast Enough Honeyoye Falls , N . Y . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —A correspondent from another state , voices my sentiments when he writes : I cant raise them fast enough , for not a day passes but what some person either calls or writes in for Berkshire stock . We fully agree that breeders in the cornbelt are justly proud of their long , slick , plump specimens , yet we of tne Genesee Valley turn out as handsome Berkshires as can be grown in the world . This is a broad assertion , I know , but the grain and rich grasses grown in this section were renowned before much of the western prairie ground was broken . It is a principle with us to feed little corn to growing stock , keeping them in clover or alfalfa pasture all summer . In this way , they acquire the extra long bodies that I fail to notice in , hogs that have been grown on a corn diet , not meaning by the remark to belittle any hog belonging to this popular family , for I am secta...
Good Advice to Breeders [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
Good Advice to Breeders We are just in receipt of a letter from a beginner in Berkshires who writes as follows : Before I heard of The Berkshire World I ordered a bred sow from a man in Indiana in answer to an advertisement . The party represented he had the large boned English Berkshire . From the looks of the sow , I call her the runt out of the litter , as it will be close work to make her weigh 400 pounds . From the looks of her litter , they must be from a runt boar . Could not make them weigh 200 pounds at 12 months old . The boar pig is making a good hog and is a good breeder , but havent anything that it fit to offer a firmer for breeding purposes . Am much interested in your paper and think you are doing a good work for Berkshires , but if the Berkshire people want to put the Berkshire in the farm lots and keep them there , they must quit sending pedigrees tsnd no hog , but show hogs as well as pedigree . It is very common to hear farmers and shippers say the Berkshire is n...
The Berkshire Suits Him Best . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
The Berkshire Suits Him Best . Ellcton , Ky . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —In regard to Berkshires , being a farmer and just starting with this breed , I have only one sow and some shoats of the Berkshires , this sow is Starlight Dolly 126813 , sire Starlight Prince 111559 , dam , Royal Dolly 2 d 111642 . After several years raising many different kinds I must say that I have found the Berkshires to be the best , and the most desirable breed I ever saw or raised . The ones I have are admired by a good many of my neighbor farmers , while some only want tlie scrub . In my county there are no Berkshires at all , but since I have had some of them , the farmers and neighbors have begun to give them a study and want them . I think I have as many as four ( 4 ) sold already , but for my self I dont want any other kind but the Berkshire . They are the hogs for me and I am striving in the interest of them , and as for the scrub , I dont need them for I cant raise eno...
EDITORIAL [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
EDITORIAL The Des Moines Show Iowa is the foremost swine breeding state . It is a fertile field for Berkshires . Although this breed is not in the lead within its borders , it is steadily gaining ground , and if our breeders will make the most of their opportunities Berkshires will rapidly take their proper place in the Hawkeye State . Our readers already have been informed that the American Berkshire Congress will offer generous prizes for Berkshires shown at the Iowa State Fair this year . We printed the list and classification on page 13 of our May issue . While these prizes in themselves should prove a powerful drawing card it should not be overlooked that the prizes offered by the fair management are abundantly worth seeking . Combine the premiums and the total is probably the most inviting opportunity that our breeders ever have had at a State Fair . Professionals and new or inexperienced breeders should be interested , as the temptation to exhibit will be felt by an classes o...

Who ' s Who in Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
Who s Who in Berkshires ALEX M . FULFORD . BEL AIR . MD We often hear the expression Who s who used in reference to persons ; generally as to their social standing . There seems to be at least two classes to which this , term is applied . One class is measured by the golden rule , not that which reads Do unto others , as you would have others do unto you , but that which assigns their social position according to the length of their purses , attaching little or no weight to what their ability or character may be . There is another class in which ability and high personal character are prerequisites for membership , where what a man has accomplished is considered of more importance than the wealth he possesses . It may be said , with truth , that very much the same conditions apply as to Who s who , in Berkshires . Yet both classes are useful in the Berk shire business . The man with plenty of money , who has taken up the breeding of Berkshires , is useful , as he furnishes a market ...
