At 7:30 the brass band and the fire department, with the presi dent, of the day and his aide, went over to the depot to meet the train from Bemidji. And how it poured! Just a sheet of water was falling. The train was nearly a half hour late, and as it pulled into the depot the band struck up a welcome air, and to the surprise and gratification of the few Cass Lakers who were at the depot over 200 Bemidjites unloaded from the train. The Bemidji Pioneer. KAISER & GREELEY. Publishers Entered In the postofllce at Bemidji. as second-clas* matter. PUBLISHED EVERY THUKSD'AY If The Standard Official County and City Paper. THE PAN-AMERICAN EXPO. THE 300 and over Minnesota editors who recently journed to Buffalo are now busy telling their readers about the big show in progress there from May 1 to Nov. 1. Inspired by example and licensed by virtue of having been there, the PIONEER editor wishes to pay tribute to that western hemisphere enterprise. As its name implies, the "Pan American" exposition is exclus ively an American affair. Its purpose is to illustrate the progress of the western hemi sphere during the nineteenth century. No attempt was made to make it a bigger show than the World's Fair at Chicago, and peo ple who harbor such an idea will be disappointed when they get to Buffalo. In cost of seeing it, the Buf falo show is as large as the Chi cago fair it is far more beautiful than the Wqrld's Pair in system...

The Beiiiidji Pioneer. KAISER & GREELEY. Publishers Entered in the postoJ3b.ee at Bemidji as second-class matter. PUBLISHED EVEKY THURSDAY Official County and City Paper. UTTERLY ROTTEN "ROT." THE following is from a recent number of the Minneapolis Times: There are staunch republicans, even, who will admit that there is little logic in the retention of the duty of $7.84 a ton on steel rails. It is not "building up an infant industry." It brings no revenue, for there are no steel rails im ported. In fact we are begin ning to export them. It elevates in no degree the "standard of American wages" or American living. This duty serves no purpose whatever except that of giving the steel combine a margin within which it can arbitrarily raise prices at pleasure. During the first three years following the enactment of the Dingle bill the price of steel rails was advanced from $19 per ton in August, 1H97 one month after the bill went into effectto $35 in May, 1900. In the September follo...
