THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY, - - November 8, 1873 MOST WELCOME NEWS. Crook a Full Brigadier General. Mr. Douglas Gunn, editor of The San Diego Daily Union, obliges us with this despatch in advance of pub lication in his own paper : Washington, October 30. Gen. P. St. George Cooke, commanding Department of the Lakes, is placed on the retired list, and that Department is abolished. fYoolr. of Arizona, is promoted to the vacancy, making aim a mil Dri jadier, and insures his stay in Arizona. Since the receipt of the despatch announcing Gen. Crook's assign ment to command this Department, no such glorious and cheerful news has come to us from Washington. It is absolute evidence that President Grant recognizes and rewards true merit, and knows full well who can command aright in Arizona. When he cut red tape and assigned him on his brevet rank, he gave evidence of knowing who could and would accom plish a task which had been too much for many higher in rank. The Pres ident kuows as well as we o...

THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY, - - JXwrnber 15, 1873 The " Trench " Mine. This mino will probably Boon figure as a paying one and therefore its lo cation and ownership may as well be stated now. It is on the north slope of the Patagonia mountain near the Sonora line in Pima county, and is owned by J. C. Hopkins, Dr. J. C Handy, Lieut. S. O'Connor, E. N, Loatherwood and Thomas Gardner, It contains per ton as per assays, 1 50 gold; $202 6S silver; 47 per cent, lead ; 2 2 Í per cent, iron, and some sulphur. Dr. Handy informs us that there ia just iron enough in it to neu- tralize the sulphur and that the ore smelts easily. Not long ago, an ex perienced smelter worked some of the ore, and from tho best information the proprietors can obtain, tho pro duct of silver was much larger than stated above. The owners ecw have miners at work, and will soon have the product of several tons with as much precision as it is possible to ob tain with the ordinary furnace. THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY, - - November 22, 1873. LAND JUMPERS AND TITLES. Land jumpers infest and damage nearly all new settlements. They are not pioneer settlers but followers. They rarely think of settling or getting upon a tract of land until some industrious man has discover ed its value and put improvements there on. They are, as a class, a set which any community could well do without andaré sometimes assisted by genuine settlers to suddenly change their base of operations. Just now, we are informed, San Pedro Valley is afflicted with the genus jumper, and 60me of the honest and early settlers there, are much annoyed thereby. We think, however much they may be vexed, the jumper cannot deprive them of any right obtained by their possession and improvements; for the first possessors have rights which will be recognized by the U. S. Land Office over any sub sequent settlers or jumpers, provided the original possessors were in actual pos session at the time and continuously alter the...

THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY, - - November 29, 1873 ABOUT TAKING IN SONORA. A great many people who know wüat they are talking about and why they are doing it, are in favor of adding Sono ra to the United States, and bo are many more who know nothing worth knowing of the subject. This annexation proposi tion is not a new one and should it be adopted, many who now favor it would as zealously disapprove of it when too late to effect anything either way. When some thing is not right in business circles, it has come to be a chronic disposition of the public to call upon government to do something to help out of the trouble, and when it comes to the rescue, then the manner of the action is sharply and often unjustly criticised. A lot of newspaper statesmen now want government to take Cuba freni old, weak and contemptible Spain, just as some want our Uncle to take or buy Sonora from Mexico. It cannot be that we are in want of more land, because we now have millions upon millions of untouched acr...
