WINNSBORO, S. 0. Saturday, January , : 1878. I. MEANS DAVIS, Editor, JNO. S. REYNOLDS, Associate Editor. Corbin as a Briber and Swindler. The Colunbia, Register completo Ty explodes Corbin's claim that the money he advanced for paying off' the Mackey Mob was a loan to thei State, made by hin in conseu(ionco! of an injunction preventing Cardozo, from using public money for that purpose. Tho Register showix that Corbin made the payment boforo Cardozo was enjoined, and further shows that no entry of the allegod loan or of the payment of the Mackeyites was made by Cardozo on the books of the State treasury. Moreover, Cardozo hiiself said that this arrangomont with Corbin was a privato mattor. All of whieh is proof conclusive that Corbin paid the Mackey nentbers out of his privato purse, or out of State funds in his possession as a privato in dividual, and that his purpose was to bribe the inembers to elect hii to the United States Senate. As measures are on foot to appoint a Legislative...

W"INSBORO. S. 0. Tuesday, January 8. ; 1878. D. MEANS DAVIS, Editor, JNO. 8. RE7NOLDS, Aesoolate Editor. To DE or not to be afraid of Russia is tho question now, most agitating the people of Mcrry Eng land. GEOnoIA HAS at last plucied up courage onough to try her carpot bagger governor, Bullock, who has boon dangling in the courts a number of years and demanding a spoody trial. That he has boon a great rascal is an acknowledged fact, but whether he will be caught by the Georgia courts is a difforont matter. No Compromises with Thieves. Tho Investigating Committoo, it is said, have succeeded without iuch trouble in fastening vomno crimo or other upon almost ovory Radical leader in the State. In dealing with these knaves there should be no distinction. If the example be once sot of lotting any culprit off, then it will be exceed ingly difficult to draw the line at any particular point. H1ANGING A WITCH. AN OLD KEW ENGLAND The Pbte Which OMb11 Jultana Cox.Si ConOcticut. rom the Hl({Ord Times. A friend in Gliastonbury vends us the following account, which had bon cut out of the Times away back in 1823, and pasted in an old scrap-book. Juliana Cox, we ro jpieo to believe, was the only witch tat was over hanged in Connocti. out ; and it is a matter of regret that oven on, such case of supersti tion and shamo can be brought up against the good old State. The place of the execution, on "Gallows Hill," in this city, is now known as4 the commanding trap rock ridge by the "stone-pits." WINNSBORO. 8. 0. Thursday, January 10, : : 1878. B. MEANS DAVIS, Editor, JNO. 8. REYNOLDS, Associate Editor. The Public Debt. The Newi and Courier makes a plausible argument in favor of standing by the present arrange mont of the public debt; but its reasoning is based rather on ex podiency than on any fixed principle of right. It shows that the con solidated debt is loss than the un questionable ante-Reconstruction debt; and argues in addition that the old bonds have passed out of the hands of the original holders, into the possession of speculators ; and moreover, that they cannot be traced up. In answer, it may be truthfully assorted that an acceptance of the compromise now, by the Democrats, after an inquiry into the nature of this bonds is repudiation to the amount of the difference betwoon the old and the consolidated bonds, and that even the payment of an equal amount in the aggregate, if made up by ecaling honest debts fifty per cent., and paying an addi tional fifty cents o...

Senator Cockr(ll, of Missouri, bolieves that the Ropublicans really have in conteniplation an attoilept to unseat Butler, of South Carolina. The Republican programmo, the Senator thinks, is to induce Patter son to pair with some Democrat, whip Conover completely into the traces, and vote Butler out. There Is little doubt that the Republican leaders would be willing to try the experiment if they thought it would work satisfactorily. But they do not like to risk the humiliation of defeat.
