Home, Farm and Garden Home, Farm and Garden THE OLD HOME. BY WILL WALLACE HARNEY. An out-door quiet held the earth Beneath tbe winter moon. The cricket chirped in cozy mirth. And the kettle croned, upon the hearth, A rweet, old-fashioned tune. Tbe old clock ticked a drowsy ra-e, With the clicking of the cricket. And red coals in the chimney -place Peeped out with many a rosy face, Like berries in a thicket. The crane' arm empty stuck out stiff. And tin-ware on the bbclvex Twinkled and winked at every gliff. In the flickering fire light an if -They whispered to themselves. The pood dame in her ruffled cap Counted her stitches slowly, And tbe old man with full many a gup Read from the Big Book on his lap, The good words wise and holy. The old clock clicked; the old man read, Hi deep voice pausing, lowering; The rood wife nodded.dropped her bead The Tips of both were beavy as lead They were sound asleep and snoring. Probably cot one person in ten who pay gas bills knows anything about his meter, much lew bow to read its rec ord; and, from personal experience, I can aware all such that it pays, in more ways than one, to be possessed of such knowledge. Do we burn our lamps all day, or extinguish them, to save con sumption T Be equally careful with your gas, and remember that you have not topped consumption when you have imply turned it off at the burner. Tou can save one-tenth of your gas bill by going, each night or morning, when you need no more light, and turn it off at the meter; and the greater the length of pipe in your house, the larger in pro portion your savings; for.no matter how tight and perfect your fittings, there is always some leakage. This you save, if nothing more. Again, gas is always con densing, and the waste from this cause alone, at times, is beyond calculation. and in certain qualities, and at certain seasons, it is greater th...
