HOME AND FOREIGN GOSSIP. A STlnwoFo. six feet long, thirty-eight inche- girth, and weighing one hundred and fifty pouLds has been taken with a spear in Lake Monona, Madison, Wis. The spi ar had one hundred feet line, and with this the sturgeon towed a boat with two men backward and forward for an hour or two before it was finally landed. A COMPANY has been formed in London with a capital of $1.000.000, "to provide in the heart of the city an aquarium and sum mer and winter garden. and, in connection therewith, to afford facilities generally for the promotion and encouragement of ar tistic, scientific. and music I tastes." THE DONALDSONVILLE CHIEF. A Wide-Awake Home Newspaper-Subscription Price, Three Dollars per Annum. VOLUME III. DONALDSONVILLE, LA., SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1874. NUMBER 52. POETRY. TROPIC MIDNIGHT. BY WILL WALLACE HARNET. TaH rain floats off; the crescent moon Holds in its cup a round of dusk, Like palm-buds Im the month of June Just breaking through their vernal husk. Night-blooiming ,g yves fill the sheaf, To catch the light distilled :n showers, Till overflwing cup and lear Its cluster breaks in midnight flowers. A sensuous stillness north and south And east and west, and just as sweet As seeds of pomegranate in the mouth, ter kisses when young lovers meet, Breaks in a low, sweet under-tone, Like brooks that grieve in beds of fern, As if by curve and pebble-stone The moon had spilled her silver urn. Its airy current f8:ls and ripes The flower and fruit to wanton use; It blows the rush's slender pipes, And roun Is the purple fig with juice; Like merchants breaking kids of nard Or j...
