Vacancy for Doctors. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 17 July 1852

Vacancy for Doctors. Greiner, the Indian Agent in New Mexico, wrote home on the 31st of March, thathe knew of an opening for an euterpising Physician. A vacancy had happened and he told how. One of the Eutaws on the San Juan River was taken sick, and an Indian Doctor from the Rio Verde was called in to attend him. Owing to the strength of the disease, or to the weakness of the prescription of the Doctor, the patient died and was buried. After the funeral the Doctor was taken by the friends of the deceased, tied up, shot and scalped: his wife's hair was cut off; his house burned, containing all his propertiy, all his animals killed. This is the law among these Indians, regulating doctors. The vacaney ie yet unfilled.

Los Angeles County Indians. [letter NO. XXI.] Decay of the Mission. The Mission, as received by the Padre Tomas, was in a flourishing condition, but in 1834, (I think it was) the Mexican Congress passed a law seculamng all of the Missions, by which each Indian was to receive his share of land, gardens and stock ; but immediately on the top of it a change was effected in the general government, and instead of carrying out the law, they abolished it. They however, secularized them and ordered Administrators to have charge instead of the clergy. These | facts being known to the Padre Tomas, ho (in 1 all probability by order of his superior,) commenced a work of destruction. The back buildings were unroofed and the timber converted into firewood. Cattle were killed on ; halves with people who took a lion's share. , Utensils were disposed of, and goods and other i articles distributed in profusion among the j Neophites. The vineyards were ordered to be i cut down, which, however, the Ind...
