1 L ■urm Runner’s political career began in 1992 as a Lancaster city councilman. In 1998 he was elected to the Assembly. There, Runner served until 2004, the year he was elected to the Senate. Mid-way into his second Senate term, Runner was elected to the Board of Equalization at the November 2010 Election. IT’S UNANIMOUS: Of the 1,024 Bills approved by both houses, 517 were by unanimous consent in the Assembly ( 50.4%), and 509 ( 49.7%) in the Senate. Approval with only one dissenting vote, whether in the Senate or Assembly, occurred on 80 Bills, equating to unanimity, or no more than one dissenting vote on 58% of the Bills approved by both houses of the legislature. Two legislators who often cast the standalone dissenting vote were Assemblymen Chuck DeVore ( R-Laguna Beach), and Tom Ammiano ( D-San Francisco). Prior to election to the Assembly in November 2008, Knight served three years on the Palmdale City Council. Upon assuming office in the legislature, Knight left his 17-year ...

whole life that she did not suffer the way the vast majority of the country had during the Depression. Why my parents hated FDR remains a mystery to me. My father hailed Social Security as the greatest thing to ever happen in America. Somehow he never could bring himself to give Roosevelt any credit for it. Both my parents lived in fear that in their old age they would be dependent on their children. Social Security was their safety net. The other day I overheard a retired teacher declare,“ If they try to mess with Social Security, they will find barricades in the streets as old folks fight for their rights.” My father would have been on the battle lines and my mother would have been loading guns. Yet, they were decidedly Republican, finding Barry Goldwater a little too liberal, but acceptable. No, they would not be members of the Tea Party. The combining of religion and politics would have appalled and frightened them. I know it frightens me. Ha The Ranch IT ALMOND FIREWOOD | ) 1 T...

In America, police are trained to lie to lull suspects into The USSR’s Potemkin Village was but a microcosm of this essentially inevitable tendency of total states to employ window dressing to obscure their killing fields. Such fictional dystopias as depicted in Orwell’s 1984 rely on lies outrageously brazen. Real-life totalitarian regimes deceive the world about the conditions endured by their people. Of course governments lie and always have. The State cannot maintain its grip on The People through violence alone – propaganda is an essential element in governance. Without a public ideology of Statism, Leviathan cannot rule with a free hand. “You lie!” shouted Rep. Joe Wilson at a frustrated President Obama on the question of health care for illegal immigrants – an accusation that was celebrated by the TEA Party Right, but Left-Liberals found the charge preposterous, even seditious. Even citizens snookered by one politician’s lies will quickly acknowledge that the other side lies.“...

11 FEBRUARY 1837: Ruling in Briscoe v. the Bank of Commonwealth of Kentucky , the Supreme Court rules that any bank owned by a State may issue bills of credit . 12 FEBRUARY 1837: In one of the first indications of the coming Panic of 1837 , a mob of unemployed workers demonstrate against high rents and the high prices of food and fuel by ransacking flour warehouses in New York . FEBRUARY 1802: President Thomas Jefferson’s newly appointed Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin proposes federal aid for the building of roads, suggesting that in the Ohio Territory one-tenth of proceeds from public land sales be used for the construction of roads from the Atlantic seaboard towns to the Ohio River . This requested increase in federal expenditures is atypical of Jefferson’s fiscal policy of retrenchment. Gallatin is able to make good Jefferson’s promise of a significant reduction in the national debt from $ 83 million in 1801 to $ 57 million in 1809. Jefferson’s financial policy also calls for...

- Magdy Saad, Abd El Rahman Ayyash, and Ahmed Abu Khalil— and held them for appoximately a week before releasing them. The three bloggers had criticized trials of MB members in military courts and voiced support for MB detainees. ”In October 2008 the SSIS arrested blogger Hany Nazir under the Emergency Law following his blogging on allegedly sensitive religious issues. The MOI rejected several court orders for his release after his incarceration began. In August the ANHRI publicly asserted that prison officials attempted to pressure Nazir to convert to Islam in exchange for his release. At year’s end Nazir remained in prison. According to the government, the SSIS continued to detain Nazir under the Emergency Law for his own security, in light of public anger toward him because of his blogging. Customs officials seized some of his personal property, including his laptop computer. A separate Wikileaks-released cable from the American Embassy in Cairo reveals U. S. government concern w...

Okay, I took a quick peek and discovered that though the jackpot was 290 million dollars, the estimated cash value was only $ 150,800,000. There are those who will begin whining that the government is taxing us to death. Oh please! If $ 150 million is not enough for you, stuff it. I appreciate the services provided by my government. The rich, with their high-priced tax attorneys, pay far less than their fair share as it is. They do not have my sympathies. Their big tax breaks have never created jobs. There is no trickle down, just ship the jobs overseas to increase our profits because $ 150 million simply is not enough to support our lifestyle. New Year’s morning. I had a Mega Millions ticket in my wallet. $ 290,000,000. That would be a nice way to start the New Year. Wow, dreaming. Worth the dollar I spent, but did I win? I peeked. Dang! Dreams on hold. The next drawing is...? Now I have $ 25 mil to play with. It is not enough for me to pull a Meg Whitman and run for governor, but ...
