. " — I K THE WEEKLY INDEPENDENT. ' 1 Extract from a letter from New Orleans, of the 8th, lú? to the San Antonio Herald- Gen. Wm. Walker is progressing be- yond all expectation in his efforts to raise funds to renew liis enterprise. Another lot of the Nicaragua Fili- busters has been brought to the Uni- ted States by the sloop-nf-war Cyane, and landed at Boston. I pity them, if they receive no more sympathy there than those landed in New York.— They would have fared better in Nic* aragua. Between two and three hun- dred more are on the United States steam frigate Roanoke, who are to be landed at New York. It seems to me that this is done for the purpose of pre- venting any o( these men from joining Gep. Walker, when he returns to Ni- caragua. This was unnecessary.— There are but few of them that Gen. Walker would take with him. When he returns to Nicaragua again, he wants men to accompany him—men of uerve and who possess some pride of character—men who aré actuated by some higher mo...

jr Curiosity Hillyer, of the NatcHe* Cwter, Ja« • chicken with four legí* B« W :l We have ourselves a chiokenaboutoj four months old, with four full grown legs, and the rudiments of a second body. Wo mentioned the fact in the Courier shortly after the chicken was ho telied but bad then no idea it would live long. It has however, grown to be a sizeable bird, lively as a lark, a voracious eater, and a most inconve- nient bouse companion. The second pair of legs aro of full size, although not used for purpose of locomotion.— They are fully feathered, but of differ- ent color from the front pair, or the re- mainder of the bird. All four feet have their full quantum of claws. The peiee of body which supports the hind pair, grows out of the back oí the bird, and rather from the top of tho back. The bird itself presents a very singu- lar appearance- There is another singularity about the chieken which is, that it does not consort with its kindied. It pre- fers the sosiety of the dog bad th...

Our village appears to be rath- •t dull now, but we are informed that there has been little or no decrease of money in circulation for several months past. But little credit is given and yet our people get their supplies of ne- cessaries as in times put; luxuries of course are not much sought for. We are glad to notice that hides are fre* quenlly brought in and exchanged for goods at remunerating prices. This commodity has until last winter been thrown away in this part of Texas, and thus thousands of dollars have been wasted each year. The prices of leather should, we think, justify buy ...
