TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. WASHINGTON LETTER. Washington, September 11,1899. Special Correspondence to Journal. IT IS believed in Washington that there will be no war be- tween England and the Transvaal Government. It would mean a great sacrifice for both parties, and, at the pres- ent writing, the British seem to be backing down from their de- mands. Much sympathy is felt for the Boers, who are fighting for independence, though in official circles friendly support is given to the British. It seems odd that just after a Peace Con- ference, when so much was talked about arbitration, that in the first two disputes that arose, there should be a disinclination on the part of the contestants in both affairs to submit their claims to arbitration. The United States refused to arbitrate the Alas- kan Boundary question, while the British take the same position relative to the dispute in the Transvaal. schley won'n get the job. Rear Admiral Sampson will be retired from the command of the...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL 3 EDISON'S GREATEST WORK. He Has Found a Process of Mining in the Arid Regions of the Southwest.—No Water Needed. N EW YORK, September 10. Hidden in the waste lands of the Southwest are tons upon tons of gold. Up to the present time this gold has had no value to man.' Mines could not be worked in that region without water, and the cost of getting one dollar's worth of gold from this land by former methods would have exceeded the value of the metal. Thomas A. Edison, however, comes to the front with an electrical ap quired to make quick movements, and it is proposed to place the cavalry brigade under his command. 1 he navy and marine corps will also be doing effective work. It is understood to be the intention of the Administration to en- force a strict blockade of the Philippine ports. This action has been considered upon the recommendation of Rear Admiral Watson, who has called attention to the amount of supplies which the insurgents have been receivi...

TEXAS MININO AND TRADE .JOURNAL. BUTCHERS' MEATS AND POULTRY. rpHE laws of supply and demand are very much in evidence [ in the upward tendency of the prices of butchers' meats, and, as it takes years, more or less, to grow and fit a bull- ock for the shambles, and as the swiftness of intercourse, natio- nal and international, brings the statistics within the reach of every one, showing a falling off of all kinds of butchers' stock, inclusive of beef, pork and mutton, there is just now nothing to show that prices will be lower in the near future. To be sure, swine and sheep are sooner grown and fitted for market than beeves, and these are available for meat at almost any age. So long as beef is high and scarce, so long also, from sympathy with the market, will pork and mutton range high and be in demand. Our own population in the United States is rapidly increasing, and so also is the population of Europe, more directly that of Great Britain and Germany. England, especially, stands ...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. FORT WORTH NEWS NOTES. Mr. John C. Phelan, assistant general manager of the Texas & Pacific Coal company, was one of a quartette of prominen t Fort Worthians to take in Galveston this week. The News, in commenting upon their visit on last Thursday, says: "The following quartette arrived here from Fort Worth Tues- day morning: Hon. Edward R. Meek, Judge of the United States Courts for the Western District of Texas; Hon. George P. Meade, director of the Fort Worth & Denver City Railroad and Referee in bankruptcy; Hon. C. K. Bell, chairman of the Demo- cratic State Executive Committee; Mr. J. C. Phelan, assistant general manager of the Texas & Pacific Coal Company. "If these gentlemen had come to Galveston singly and alone the visit of each would have had 'significance.' It would have been said that Judge Meek came to Galveston to see Dr. John Grant, Republican National Committeeman for Texas, on mat- ters of political importance. As a matter...
