Cargo--sundry merchandize, 400 bushels   maize, and 1000 bushels wheat. MISCELLANY, ORIGINAL AND SELECT. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 6 August 1825

MISCELLANY, ORIGINAL AND SELECT. Some of the English Papers have lent their columns to the insertion of a letter   from Sydney, dated July last. It consists of a violent and scurrilous attack upon Van Diemen's Land. The writer, after fatiguing himself with the changes of abuse of this country, and of flattery of Sydney, proceeds in the same mode of invidious comparison, abusing Sir Thomas Brisbane and extolling General Macquarie. He congratulates himself sincerely on not having stopped at Hobart Town as a settler ; and we think it a cause of equal gratulation to us, that we are rid of so troublesome a fellow. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, on   opening the last budget of Ways and Means, made one of the most gratifying statements which England has heard for many seasons. Among other reductions were, rum from 10s. to 8s ; West India coffee, from 1s. to 6d ; hemp, 1d. to ½d ; British spirits, 10s. 6d. to 5s; cyder, 30s. a-hogshead, to 15s. " Say 10s," said M...
