Commercial Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 16 May 1861

Commercial Intelligence. SALE OF THE BREMER AND HAWK, STEAMERS.- Mr. R. Cribb sold yesterday, at his rooms, the river steam- boats Bremer and Hawk, the property of Mr. Boy- land. The boats being well known and useful,   there was an attendance of the right description ; and after some competition the Hawk was pur- chased by Campbell and Son, of Red Bank, for the sum of £915. Thc Bremer was also competed for, and was purchased by Mr. J. Fleming, of the Bremer Mills, for thc sum of £1275. We under- stand that it is the intention of both the purchasers to continue the boats in the river trade. The Messrs. Campbell and Mr. J. Fleming are each large river shippers, and the boats will be most useful to them in carrying on their respective   trades. As there is now a certainly of a large demand for the Red Bank coals, from the A.S.N. Co. alone, the Messrs, Campbell have done well to ensure the speedy passage of their punts up and down the river. Mr. Fleming's larg...

(From the Empire, May lOW.) , , At lastwe have the sad thirteenth of May, ¦¦¦ The dying lords succumb to Pate's decree; Reporters homeward plod their weary way, And leave theplace in loneliness and nie. Beneath this gallery's overhanging shade, Where lies the dust in many a gathering heap, In quiet nooks, in solemn silence laid, The echoes of departed greatness sleep. ARE OUR WOOL PRODUCING CAPABILITIES FULLY DEVELOPED. (From the Argus.) [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 17 May 1861

ARE OUR WOOL PRODUCING CAPA- BILITIES FULLY DEVELOPED. (From tho Argus.) Some twenty years ago, it was the. com mon remark of all contemplative observers that wool and oil were the making of the Australian colonies, tho cause of their rapid growth and steady prosperity. Raising tho chief necessariesbf life within themselves, these exports purchased all, that was required from abroad, and obtained for them such good credit tiiat tho balance of trado was largely in their favour, not according to the limited mercantile views on this subject, but inreality sn, for there were in most years important additions of capital for investment, and these were in a great part represented by tho excess of imports. The unremitted pursuit of the whale along tho coasts, before many years had thc effect of rendering this source of wenlth each season moro precari-. ous, and, maritime people though wo are, the true enterprising commercial spirit never asserted itself as it should in following up this lucr...

THE BOUNDARY QUESTION. (From the Empire, May 9.) [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 17 May 1861

THE BOUNDARY QUESTION. (F,om thc Empire, May 0.) The resolutions proposed by Mr. Cowper in tho Assembly yesterday, and carried by the : large majority of thirty-two to six,;must commend themselves to tho approval of every conscientious man, in whatsoever part of Australia ho may reside.: : The separa- tion power of her Majesty the Queen, as pro- vided for. by, daw, has already been com- pletely; exhausted, and any lurthor curtail- ment of this' colony would be not only a. grovioiis injustice to its inhabitants^ but a breach of faith, and a violation of tho Con- stitution. . A brief history of the separation question, as revealed in tho official docu- ments before us, will exhibit in so clear a light the justice of thc cause maintained almost unanimously in the Assembly, that' the most sceptical of tho small minority must bo convinced of tho unworthiness of their positiou. The Imperial Act of 18-12 contemplated the probability of a future separation on the north, and provided for it ...
